INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team dropped a 65-49 decision to Northwestern in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament Friday (March 11) inside Banker's Life Fieldhouse.
The Wolverines and Wildcats met three times this season with U-M going 2-1, but Northwestern pulled away from a 30-30 halftime tie and outscored the Wolverines by 16 after the break.
Junior Naz Hillmon had her 16th 20-point game of the season with 26 points and added 12 rebounds for her 13th double-double. Junior Leigha Brown had her first double-double as a Wolverine, scoring 10 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and adding two blocks, while Amy Dilk had eight points and three assists.
Hillmon ran the Wolverine offense in the first quarter, scoring all but three of Michigan's 13 points as U-M went into the second 10 minutes of play trailing Northwestern, 17-13. The Wolverines picked up the momentum in the second quarter, forcing a Northwestern travel on defense before Dilk drove into the center of the key and pulled up for the jumper to knot the score at 19 and force a Wildcat timeout with 6:55 left in the half.
The two teams exchanged baskets throughout the remainder of the second quarter with five ties, and they headed into the halftime break tied at 30. Hillmon scored 17 points and had six rebounds in the first 20 minutes of play, while Brown had six points and eight rebounds.
Northwestern was the first to get its offensive rhythm in third quarter, going up 38-32 before Michigan called a timeout with 5:50 left. The Wildcats ended the third quarter on a 6-0 run, while the Wolverines could not find a basket for three minutes and headed into the final 10 minutes of play trailing, 46-38.
The Wildcats stretched their lead to 14, 57-43, using another 6-0 run and a Michigan scoring drought going into the media timeout with 4:51 remaining in the contest. Despite their best efforts, the Wolverines were unable to string together any large runs.
Michigan will wait to learn its seed in the NCAA Tournament with the selection show airing on ESPN Monday (March 15) at 7 p.m.
