NASHVILLE — Tennessee Titans fans will get to see their favorite NFL team play an extra home game in 2021. League officials decreed on Tuesday that the 32 franchises had come to an agreement on a 17-game regular season this Fall.
It will be the first time in 43 years (1978) that the NFL has added this kind of inventory.
Tennessee and the other 31 clubs gain this extra contest due to the NFL-NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement that was signed last March. The motion for the enlarged league slate was approved by the union and its players, among other things, in the new CBA. It should be noted, however, that the players were split on their vote to approve the new agreement.
It passed with 49.5% of union members voting against.
What does this mean for the Titans?
The Titans will now host the New Orleans Saints in 2021 at some point in the new 18-week season.
The 17th game will showcase teams from opposing conferences that finished in the same place in their respective division the year before
Tennessee finished in first place in the AFC South in 2020. New Orleans clinched their division in their last campaign as well. The league has put out opponents for each franchise in the year to come but has not yet announced dates. The expectation is that Week 18 will remain divisional rivalry games.
Jim Wyatt of the Titans official website said that the game would, in fact, be played at Nissan Stadium. Why that information is worth stating is because the NFL has designs on launching a formal rotation requiring every team to play a home game outside the U.S. at least once every eight years. That rotation, according to Sports Business Journal, is not expected to being until 2022.
17 games were critical in making that happen.
What is the structure of the new NFL season
According to the NFL, the preseason will be reduced from four games to three to maintain compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.
The CBA capped the total number of preseason and regular-season games played at 20. Tennessee and every other club team will play 17 regular-season games with one bye week. For the fans and the media, it means more football.
What remains to be seen is how it affects roster construction or competitiveness.
