SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The No. 6-seeded University of Michigan women's basketball team pushed No. 2 seed Baylor to overtime in an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game that came down to the final possession, but the Wolverines ultimately lost, 78-75, seeing their historic season come to a close Saturday afternoon (March 27) at the Alamodome.
The Wolverines used five straight made field goals in regulation to tie it up and force the overtime period before taking the lead on three occasions in the extra session.
Michigan grabbed its first lead of the game, 65-64, on its first possession of OT when graduate student Akienreh Johnson made a nice jumper, but Baylor responded with back-to-back makes. The Wolverines gained a two-point edge, 68-66, on a triple from senior Hailey Brown, and two free throws from junior Naz Hillmon swung the lead back in Michigan's direction, 70-68, with 3:11 left in the overtime period. The Maize and Blue continued to fight as junior Danielle Rauch drove the left side for a layup, was fouled and made the free throw to tie the game at 73 with 1:56 on the clock.
With U-M down three, junior Leigha Brown scooped home a driving lefty shot with 15 seconds left to bring Michigan within one, but Baylor got free for a layup with 8.7 ticks remaining, making it 78-75. Johnson's premature half-court shot just missed, but Michigan got a second chance when the Baylor rebounder's foot was on the sideline. After a long delay, U-M inbounded with 0.9 on the clock, and Leigha Brown's long three attempt from near the right hashmark fell short of the rim.
Michigan was led by Leigha Brown, who scored 23 points, 19 of which came after halftime, and grabbed seven rebounds to tie for a team best with Hillmon, who added 16 points, while Johnson netted 14 points and added two rebounds and three assists in her final outing as a Wolverine.
Hailey Brown made two clutch three-pointers in her final game at Michigan and added four rebounds and four assists, while Rauch scored nine points with two triple and had five assists.
Despite two scoring droughts of more than two minutes each in the first quarter, the Maize and Blue kept the game within four until Hailey Brown knocked down a triple with 28 seconds left to pull U-M within one, 14-13. Baylor tacked on two free throws in the final seconds to take a slight three-point lead the second quarter.
The Wolverines had some trouble taking care of the basketball early in the second quarter, committing four straight turnovers and allowing Baylor to take a 23-17 lead into the media break with 4:33 on the clock. Baylor extended its lead to 12 before sophomore Maddie Nolan knocked down a key three-pointer to end the Michigan scoring drought and cut the Baylor lead back to single digits, 29-20.
The U-M defense kept the Bears off the scoreboard for the remaining 2:30 of the half, and Johnson hit Michigan's third trey of the game to trim the deficit to six, 29-23, going into the locker room at halftime.
Johnson started the second half like she ended the first, knocking down a triple on Michigan's first possession, and Rauch dropped one from beyond the arc on the Wolverines' second possession of the third quarter.
Baylor strung together an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 47-36 before Leigha Brown netted four straight, including two free throws off a steal to end the third quarter with the Wolverines trailing, 47-40.
With the Baylor defense concentrating on Hillmon, Leigha Brown was a big piece of the Wolverine success, scoring seven points in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer to bring U-M within four, 53-49, with just over five minutes to play.
The Wolverines did not let up on their offensive push as Rauch hit Johnson in the corner for a triple with 2:30 left in the contest, drawing Michigan to within two, 59-57. Two turnovers proved to be costly for U-M as Baylor scored five points with an and-one play to force a U-M timeout with 1:57 remaining.
Leigha Brown came out of the timeout to score four straight points to make it a one-point game, 62-61, with less than a minute to play. The Wolverines fouled with 32 seconds left and Baylor made one of two from the stripe.
The Wolverines advanced the ball to the frontcourt and worked the clock down until Hailey Brown fed Hillmon, who caught the pass over the top and made a left-handed layup to knot the score at 63. The Lady Bears missed on their final possession, and the two teams headed to overtime.
Michigan concludes its season with a 16-6 record. The Wolverines earned their highest NCAA Tournament seed ever (No. 6) and reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history with wins over No. 11 seed Florida Gulf Coast and No. 3 seed Tennessee.
