Luis Enrique’s departure from his role as manager of Spain’s men’s national team was not related to his Twitch streams or other hobbies, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales has said.
Enrique, 52, left his role as Spain boss last week after his side were knocked out by Morocco on penalties in the 2022 World Cup last-16.
The former Barcelona manager also gained prominence during the tournament for doing hour-long Twitch streams live at night during the World Cup, bypassing traditional media and the RFEF’s communications team.
However, during a press conference unveiling new Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, who has been promoted from being the under-21’s head coach, Rubiales denied that Enrique’s Twitch streams resulted in the decision.
Instead, Rubiales said that he and other directors at the federation decided they were not going to renew Enrique’s contract, and there was no discussion about his future after the tournament.
“It was a communication from the RFEF in which we told Luis Enrique that we are pursuing another project,” he said. “Two and a half years ago we decided that we were not going to talk until after the World Cup.
“Luis Enrique did not tell me that he wanted to continue because the conversation went along the lines of one project ending and another beginning.
“It’s nothing to do with Twitch, bicycles or anything else, we simply agreed, Jose Antonio Molina, Albert Luque and I, that it was time for a new project.”
Enrique took charge in 2018 and guided Spain to the Euro 2020 semi-finals, where they lost to Italy.
His replacement De la Fuente has been part of the Spanish set-up since 2013 and has coached their youth teams. He led Spain to a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
