Senior Man Utd star backed to seek immediate exit after humiliating Ten Hag snub - TEAMtalk

Rio Ferdinand stressed he’d be “looking for a new club right now” if in the same position as a senior Man Utd star who was humbled by Erik ten Hag twice in a row.

Manchester United made it three wins from three since domestic football re-took centre stage. A 2-0 victory over Burnley in the EFL Cup was followed up with a 3-0 league win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

A hattrick of victories – and clean sheets – were then secured on Saturday afternoon after United sunk Wolves 1-0 at Molineux.

Ten Hag sprung a surprise when selecting left-back Luke Shaw to start at centre-half against Forest. The Dutchman doubled down against Wolves and once again his decision was vindicated.

Shaw took the position usually held by Lisandro Martinez, though the Argentine is currently unavailable following his World Cup exploits.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were both available to call upon to partner Raphael Varane. However, Ten Hag opted for Shaw and explained his decision post-match.

Maguire snub explained

When asked if Shaw playing at left centre-back was simply because he’s left-footed, Ten Hag nodded before also highlighting Shaw’s far superior speed.

“That is one of the reasons,” Ten Hag told BT Sport’s Des Kelly.

“You get better angles in possession, but in this game it was important [to pick Shaw] because they have speed on the right wing.

“Shaw can defend that and cover that and allows us to bring the left-back [Tyrell Malacia] higher. With Shaw it was always protected.”

While Ten Hag’s rationale makes perfect sense, it will still be a bitter pill to swallow for Lindelof and Maguire especially.

Maguire remains the world’s most expensive defender having cost £80m back in 2019. He was among England’s top performers in Qatar and would have expected to be given the chance to bring that form back to club level with Martinez currently absent.

No player readily accepts a place on the bench, especially when overlooked in favour of a player selected to play out of position.

Ferdinand backs Maguire to force Man Utd exit

When Man Utd great Rio Ferdinand spoke about Maguire’s situation during BT’s broadcast, the pundit stressed Maguire should be looking for a way out of Old Trafford.

With Varane established as the right-sided centre-back and Ten Hag suggesting he’ll only play left-footers as his partner, Maguire’s chances of future game-time look incredibly bleak.

“If I’m Harry Maguire, I’m looking for a new club right now,” said Ferdinand.

“This new manager is showing by his team selection that he is not going to be one of the two, three top centre-backs at this club.”
