Real Madrid do not have much depth in certain positions on the pitch. One of them is striker. Karim Benzema is a world-class player and the reigning Ballon d’Or winner. But beyond him, there are no real cover options for Los Blancos, with Mariano Diaz the only other recognised forward in the squad and he seems completely out of Carlo Ancelotti’s plans at the moment.
Thus, Mariano leaving in January would not be a blow for Real Madrid, especially with Ancelotti preferring to use Rodrygo in a false nine role.
Mariano’s current deal with the club runs out next summer and thus, he is expected to be on his way out soon, one way or the other. The Real Madrid player had been linked with a move to Wolves recently though, who are being managed by Julen Lopetegui at the moment.
But as announced by Wolves’ official website, Matheus Cunha has joined the club on a loan move from Atletico Madrid, which will automatically become a permanent deal until 2027, should certain clauses be triggered.
Real Madrid player’s transfer hopes might be over after Atletico Madrid exit
With Wolves signing Cunha, at least till the end of the season, it is hard to imagine them making a move for Mariano in January as well.
The most remarkable thing about the Cunha deal is that rumours suggest that Wolves will have to pay a transfer fee around €52 million, if or when the loan deal becomes permanent. That is incredible considering that the Brazilian’s spell at Atletico Madrid has been underwhelming.
As a result, Mariano’s chances of getting a move to the Premier League club might be as good as over, at least for the time being.
Of course, Real Madrid could get a token transfer fee out of the departure of Mariano, if they are able to find him a new club in January. But that does look unlikely at this point of time considering his form in recent years as well as the fact that he will be a free agent soon.
