Marcus Rashford scored a stunning individual goal in Manchester United's 2-0 League Cup win over Burnley, but admitted afterwards to lingering feelings of disappointment at England's World Cup exit.

Rashford looked in good shape at Qatar 2022, at one stage threatening to challenge for the Golden Boot after scoring three goals in the group stages.

But England - with Rashford peripheral - were knocked out by France in the quarter-finals, and so the Three Lions' chance of international glory disappeared once more, when hopes had been so high following a strong tournament to that point.

Rashford, while clearly delighted to be back playing at Old Trafford, did reveal the anguish he was trying to overcome.

“It’s good to come back. A tough game, but it’s good to get the win and go on to the next round," the 25-year-old said, who took home the player of the match award.

"There was space in front of me [for his goal], and I was almost waiting for the right time to get a pass off. Then a gap appeared and I tried to go for it.

"It was such a disappointing feeling to get knocked out [of the World Cup] and you have to try to pick yourself up.

"There’s no time to feel sorry for yourself here. It’s just about getting results.

"We’ve got to recover and try to do the same at the next game. It was fun to be back out there, and the lads enjoyed it. We’re in every tournament to win it.

"This trophy early on in the season in February can really push you to go on and achieve more in the season. So we’ll do everything we can.”

Of the comfortable win, which saw Christian Eriksen get the opener on 27 minutes, United boss Erik ten Hag said: “We were against a good team.

"There is room for improvement, we have to work on that, but I am pleased with the win.

"The players are quite hungry. It was great to see a team goal, a really good goal.

"Rashford was a constant threat. He is so dangerous when he dribbles with his pace and movement.

"We have to be ready for the Premier League restart. We want to win every game.”
