GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior Maggie MacNeil etched her name into the history books on Thursday (March 19), winning an NCAA title in the 100-yard butterfly to lead the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team on day three of the NCAA Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Heading into tomorrow's final day, the Wolverines sit in eighth place (127.5 points).

MacNeil came into the day sharing possession of the NCAA record at 49.26, a performance she first put up back in Decenber 2019. She went 50.23 in the morning's preliminaries and clearly saved some juice for the final, finishing in 48.89 to become the first woman in history to break 49 seconds, establishing a new NCAA record. MacNeil is the seventh Michigan swimmer or diver to win an NCAA title and first since Emily Brunemann won the 1,650-yard freestyle back in 2008.

She was joined in the final by junior and training partner Olivia Carter, who finished in sixth. Her time of 51.19 is a new career-best and makes her the second-fastest performer in school history.

Freshman Kathryn Ackerman was one of only two freshmen in the top 16 of the 400-yard IM, but more than held her own, moving up one spot from her preliminaries seed to finish seventh (4:06.95). She is the program's first All-American in that event since Emily Brunemann in 2008. Two others finished outside scoring range: junior Victoria Kwan in 31st (4:14.03) and freshman Claire Donan in 37th (4:15.62).

Freshman Sophie Housey scored points in the consolation final of the 200-yard freestyle, tying for 14th (1:45.74) to earn an All-America Honorable Mention. Sophomore Megan Glass, who has taken on an added role on relays this week, finished 26th (1:46.46), a seven-spot improvement from her seed.

After swimming breaststroke on yesterday's 400-yard medley relay, sophomore Mariella Venter returned to her more natural stroke on Friday, finishing 47th in the 100-yard backstroke (53.81).

The Wolverines finished the session with a 16th-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay from MacNeil, Venter, Carter and Glass (1:37.37). MacNeil led off in 23.17, the fastest split of the field. The foursome collected the two points by finishing .01 seconds ahead of Kentucky.

The NCAA Championships conclude tomorrow (Saturday, March 20) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and finals begin at 6 p.m. Both events will be streamed live on ESPN3.
