No. 8 Oklahoma State held off an all-day charge from rival and No. 2 Oklahoma, as the Cowboys claimed the event with a 47-under par score of 817. The Sooners were just four back at 43-under (821), not able to overtake the three-shot advantage OSU had entering the final round. The Cowboys' four scorers had 23 birdies and just five bogeys, the Sooners' 24 birds and seven boges. No. 6 Texas finished a distant third at 31-under 833, with No. 41 San Diego State (835) and No. 4 Illinois and No. 17 and host Arizona (836), rounding out the top five.
Colorado, ranked No. 74 by Golfweek, finished with a 7-over team score of 871, just 10 strokes off a possible top 10 finish. CU did turn in the 10th best score for the final round, an even-par 288, which bettered three of eight top 50 teams in the nation that competed here this weekend. The Buffs opened with a 1-under 287, but an 8-over 296 slid CU down the standings after being tied for ninth after the first 18 holes.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin paced the Buffaloes here, tying for 24th as he closed his efforts here with a 1-over 73 for a 4-under 212 total on the 7,167-yard, par-72 Catalina Course at Tucson National. He tied for the team-high with 13 birdies for the weekend to go with 32 pars that countered nine bogeys; he had four, nine and five, respectively, in Sunday's final round. Starting on No. 10, he made the turn at 3-over and rebounded to play the front nine at 2-under.
It was O'Loughlin's 17th career tournament under par at Colorado out of 37 events.
Senior Victor Bjorlow carded CU's best round of the day – a 3-under 69 – that followed a second round 70 after opening with a 78; it brought him back down to 1-over 217 for the tourney and a tie for 53rd. He scored his second eagle in the meet on Sunday, coming on the 587-yard par-5 8th hole; it was his team-best fourth eagle of the season and the 15th in his career). He also tied for the team-best with five birdies in the final round to go with nine pars. He was even through 16 holes and then scored his eagle and finished with a bird. He also matched O'Loughlin's birdie total for the weekend with 13.
Senior Cole Krantz rebounded from a second round 80 with a 2-under 70, finishing here in a tie for 63rd with a 3-over 219 total. He also had five birdies in the final round, with 10 pars against three bogeys, the last of which came on his final hole (No. 9) that prevented him from opening and closing the event with a 69. He tied for the team-high with 33 pars here.
Junior John Paterson wrapped things here with a 4-over 76, which had him tie for 92nd after posting a 12-over 228 total. It was his second straight event without a score of 72 or better after 12 consecutive tournaments with at least one. He avoided big numbers here (just one double), but managed only five birdies total with 33 pars (to tie Krantz) to offset 15 bogeys.
Redshirt freshman Canon Olkowski was withdrawn early in the round due to decision by the coaching staff. He was tied for 95th after two rounds with a 74-79—153 scorecard.
"Good rounds today from Victor and Cole," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Daniel wasn't at his best but fought hard to post a respectable score, and John was just a bit off this week. I was proud of the way we finished the week despite not playing our best."
Oklahoma's Garett Reband claimed medalist honors, fashioning a final round 66 to win by two strokes with a 15-under par 201 scorecard. That bested Oklahoma State's Eugenio Chacarra and Texas' Pierceson Coody by two shots.
The Buffaloes will remain on the road for their next competition, Stanford's "The Goodwin," which runs Thursday through Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif.
NOTES: O'Loughlin upped his team-leading total to 48 subpar career rounds this weekend, and with all three rounds counting toward CU's team score, he now has had 99 or 105 do so (94.3 percent) …Bjorlow now has the second-most eagles in school history (since they started being tracked in 2010); his 15 trail the 18 that Jeremy Paul scored in his CU career (2013-17) … Play was suspended Saturday with 10 teams and half the field (52 of 104 players) unable to complete their second round, including three Buffaloes (Olkowski parred both his remaining holes, Krantz parred his but Paterson took a bogey) … The Buffaloes finished 15th in par-3 scoring (plus-17), 15th in par-4 scoring (22-over) and tied for 10th in par-5 scoring (minus-18) … CU tied for 10th in birdies (47) and was last in pars (142) … O'Loughlin lowered his team-leading stroke average from 72.33 to 71.92; his career mark of 71.74 continues to threaten the school record of 71.72 by Paul … The average score for the tournament (311 total rounds) was 72.34 (consistent over the three rounds: 72.37, 72.39 and 72.26).
