BOULDER - In a back-and-forth overtime thriller, Colorado fell to No. 20 Stanford 10-9 at Kittredge Field on Saturday in its Pac-12 Conference lacrosse opener.
Colorado (2-3, 0-1 Pac-12) went into the second half with a 4-3 lead over Stanford (3-0, 2-0 Pac-12) after 30 minutes of back-and-forth scoring. The Cardinal tested the Buffs in the opening period putting 11 shots on goal, but Julia Lisella was rock solid at goalie tallying eight saves. CU also put the pressure on Stanford on the offensive end with 10 shots on goal, connecting on four.
The second period was another battle of rotating goals with the score eventually coming to a 9-7 Colorado lead. Stanford then got within one with about nine minutes to play. Colorado turned the ball over deep in Stanford's half with 46 seconds left and the Cardinal marched down to score the equalizer with 22 seconds left, sending the contest into overtime. The Cardinal prevailed in the extra period to win the game 10-9.
"I thought defensively we stuck to the game plan and played hard," said head coach Ann Elliott Whidden. "It is hard when you can't make plays down the stretch. We have to be able to execute better."
Six different Buffs scored goals, with Charlie Rudy and Ashley Stokes providing the majority of the output with three and two, respectively. Stokes added two assists for a team-high four points. The Buffs were outshot by the Cardinal 15-13 in the first half but went into the break with a 4-3 lead. Colorado was outshot by Stanford again in the second half 17-16, but this time Stanford connected on more attempts to outscore the Buffs in the half to force the extra period.
Colorado turned the ball over 14 times, including the costly mistake with under a minute to play. In the extra period, they had one turnover and didn't get a shot off.
"Offensively we did some things well," said Whidden on the team's offensive performance. "When we were doing what we needed to be doing on and off the ball, we were successful and finding opportunities. When we got tired we were not capable of doing everything we needed to do to be successful. This is a very good Stanford team. You can't just watch people play lacrosse. You have to be playing."
The Buffs played a "bend but don't break" style defense in the first half when they allowed only three goals on 11 shots on goal thanks to stout play from Lisella. The second half was a bit of a different story when Colorado allowed six goals on 13 shots on goal. Colorado forced eight turnovers on the day with Kate White and Eliza Cahill each recording two caused turnovers. Lisella ended the day with a season-high 16 saves which is tied for second for most in her career.
"We tried to play team defense, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter," said Whidden on holding Stanford star Ali Baiocco to no goals. "If one player doesn't score and they have other players that score, we didn't do a good enough job across the field."
WHAT HAPPENED: The Cardinal opened the game with two goals in the first ten minutes of action before the Buffs put up a pair to tie it. Rudy put the Buffs on the board with a free-position goal at the 17:38 mark and Stokes scored the equalizer with 9:13 left in the half forcing a Stanford timeout.
After goals by the Cardinal and the Buffs to make it 3-3, CU came out of a timeout with a marker by Kasey Braun, assisted by Stokes, with 18 seconds to go to take the lead (4-3) into the break.
Colorado opened the half with a goal by Stokes 48 seconds in to go up 5-3 on Stanford. The Cardinal answered right back with a man-up goal at the 28:11 mark. The Buffs then scored another pair of goals before a Stanford goal to make it 7-5 Colorado.
The Buffs and Cardinal spent the next five minutes trading goals to bring the score to 9-7. Both goals by the Buffs in the stretch were from Rudy, her second and third of the day. Stanford broke the back-and-forth with another goal at the 9:08 mark to narrow the lead to 9-8.
With under a minute to play, CU turned the ball over and Stanford raced down the field to tie the game, all with just 22 seconds to play. The Buffs had possession with eight seconds to go but ran out of time and the two headed to overtime.
Stanford won the draw control to start the extra period and called a quick timeout. They came out with a good look on goal which was stopped by Lisella. After a Colorado turnover, Stanford possessed the ball again and scored on a goal from Mikaela Watson to win the game 10-9.
KEY STAT: Julia Lisella recorded 16 saves in the loss to Stanford. She has now recorded 15-plus saves in a game four times in her career. This is the first since May 10, 2019, when she stopped 15 saves against Dartmouth.
NOTABLE:
- Charlie Rudy has scored in 10 straight games dating back to the season opener of the 2020 season
- Colorado has scored a man-up goal in four of five games this season.
- The Buffs lost their second overtime game of the year with the first coming in an 11-10 defeat at Vanderbilt.
- This is the second overtime game in a row for the Buffs at home against the Cardinal. They lost 13-12 in 2019.
- The Buffs are now 1-2 all-time in overtime games against Stanford.
