Bruno Fernandes has aimed a dig at the way Manchester United handled the departure of David de Gea, suggesting the keeper was denied the exit he deserved.
De Gea, 32, has now left Old Trafford after 12 seasons with the Red Devils. The former Spain international made 545 appearances for the north-west giants after arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2011. But he has now departed after falling out of contract at the Theatre of Dreams.
De Gea penned an emotional letter to United fans on Saturday. He thanked them for their ‘unwavering gratitude and appreciation’ during his 12 years at the club.
The Madrid-born ace leaves United with a Premier League title to his name.
He claimed the 2012-2013 crown and also won the FA Cup and EFL Cup during his lengthy stay.
The talented keeper was also part of the Manchester United side that won the 2016-17 Europa League.
But he is now no longer part of the club, with rumours of a possible move to Saudi Arabia.
Fernandes has been De Gea’s team-mate at United since January 2020.
And he is clearly unhappy that such a loyal servant has been allowed to leave without acknowledgment from the supporters.
“You know what I think about you and how much I will miss you bro,” he wrote on Instagram.
“You deserved to say goodbye at the stadium with all the fans cheering you for all the beautiful memories. You made history at the club and your name will not be forgotten, and no one can take that away from you.”
De Gea replacement close to signing
United are said to have offered De Gea a new deal earlier this year before withdrawing the contract offer.
Once that action was taken, it was inevitable that 2022-2023 would be his last in goal for the Red Devils.
Although a talented keeper who has made numerous world-class saves over the years, he had become error prone in recent seasons.
A few pundits had aimed barbs at the Spaniard, with Roy Keane particularly vociferous in his condemnation of the player.
The former United skipper urged club officials to let him go and has got his wish. And it seems as though De Gea’s replacement has been lined up.
Inter Milan shot-stopper Andre Onana is the man they want to take over between the posts.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently tweeted that United are ‘really close’ to signing the former Cameroon international.
The Italian journalist stated that the deal will be completed by the end of next week as personal terms have been agreed.
The 27-year-old is expected to join the club prior to their pre-season tour to the USA.
Fernandes will also be on that trip and it remains to be seen if club officials take kindly to his latest outburst.
