Another incident of a passenger tampering with the emergency exit door on an Indian airline has surfaced. It happened on a domestic flight operated by IndiGo earlier this month, creating panic among other passengers and crew members. The accused passenger was later handed over to authorities upon landing.

Panic during take-off

A passenger on an IndiGo flight from Hyderabad to New Delhi attempted to open the emergency exit during take-off, creating panic among his fellow passengers and crew members.

The incident occurred on July 8th, and the passenger in question was reportedly sitting in seat 18A near the emergency exit door. According to reports, it was during take-off that the accused passenger removed the emergency exit door cover, leading to the crew taking control of the situation.

The flight attendants restored the cover, informed the pilot-in-command, and moved the passenger to a different seat. Upon landing in Delhi, he was handed over to authorities, and a first information report (FIR) was filed against him. S. S. Panesar, former Director of Flight Safety at Indian Airlines, explained why even removing the exit door cover was dangerous. He said,

“If the cover is removed, then the handle is bare open and it can open mid-air due to any reason and it is hazardous for the aircraft.”

It has happened before

IndiGo, unfortunately, is no stranger to passengers tampering with the emergency exit doors of its aircraft. In January, a passenger traveling on an IndiGo flight between Nagpur and Mumbai tried to remove the cover of the emergency exit while the plane was still in the air.

The incident took place when the aircraft was on approach for landing. The airline said that upon noticing the passenger’s action, the cabin crew alerted the pilots immediately, and the passenger was “appropriately cautioned.”

In May, a passenger became curious about the emergency exit of an IndiGo plane at Goa’s Dabolim Airport, tampered with the cover flap, and pulled the control handle of the door. The aircraft was at the bay area and was preparing for departure. It was revealed that IndiGo had to cancel the flight and offered passengers a full refund or the option to take an alternative flight.

Not just in India

Such incidents are not specific to India. Earlier this month, a passenger opened an emergency exit of a Sun Country Airlines Boeing 737 plane in the US and jumped out. The reason: he learned that law enforcement was waiting at the gate to execute arrest warrants for suspicion of felony domestic assault, drug dealing, trespassing, and felony violating a no-contact order, among more charges.

In May, a passenger opened one of the emergency doors of an Asiana Airlines Airbus A321 plane shortly before landing. It caused breathing difficulties to a number of those onboard, and several passengers had to be taken to hospital upon landing. In response to the incident, Asiana stopped selling emergency exit row seats on its fleet of A321-200 aircraft.
