The Hanks family is the gift that keeps on giving. All three of two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks’s sons have inherited space in the spotlight—the eldest, Colin, starred in series including Fargo and A Friend of the Family; the youngest, Truman, played a junior version of his father’s character in A Man Called Otto; and who could forget Chet, an occasional actor and aspiring rapper who controversially promoted “White Boy Summer” in 2021 and previously said he “didn’t have a strong male role model” to advise him on growing up famous.

This week, however, a new star from the Hanks brood was born. That would be Carly Reeves, the actor’s niece, who has newly made a name for herself with a stunning exit from ABC’s reality-competition series Claim to Fame. Hosted by brothers Kevin and Frankie Jonas, the show pits relatives of celebrities against one another in a guessing game of who each contestant is related to. The person who can conceal the identity of their famous family member the longest is awarded a $100,000 prize.

That person will evidently not be Reeves, who was cast away from the competition in Monday night’s premiere episode. Fellow contestant Hugo guessed Hanks after correctly interpreting a park bench and a ping-pong paddle as references to 1994’s Forrest Gump. Suffice it to say, Reeves didn’t take kindly to her ouster.

Shortly after being eliminated, Reeves could be heard audibly screaming and yelling while packing her belongings. “I didn’t even get to do any challenges. I don’t deserve this. I should have more camera time. I should be here longer!” she wailed as her shocked castmates listened in horror. Fellow contestant Karsyn quipped, “I did not have that level of drama for the first guess-off on my Claim to Fame bingo card.”

As the daughter of Rita Wilson’s sister, Reeves is actually Hanks’s niece by marriage, according to USA Today, although she received her uncle’s tepid blessing when joining the reality show. “Oh, he was excited for me. He was like, ‘Going on a show, that’s your choice. I hope you do well. Best of luck,’” she told Entertainment Weekly while discussing her one-episode wonder.

According to her IMDb, Reeves has secured small roles in projects featuring her famous family members, including Charlie Wilson’s War, Raise Your Voice, and Larry Crowne. But her best performance was undoubtedly as a heightened version of herself. “I think I overreacted a little bit, but I’m an emotional, very dramatic person,” Reeves continued, admitting embarrassment over her plea for more screen time. “That’s just so silly of me to say,” she said. “But I also was just saying things out of my mouth.”

And Reeves apparently has no qualms about Hanks watching her onscreen tantrum. “I hope I don’t embarrass him, but I don’t think I do,” she told EW. “So I would love for him to watch it, because I think it’s hilarious…. He’s happy for me no matter what. He did ask me, ‘Did you make some money?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I made a little bit.’ And he said, ‘Okay, good.’”

If you thought The Bear’s familial trauma was chaos personified, well, the Berzattos have nothing on the family called Hanks.
