South I-75 exit, entrance ramps to close at 11 Mile in Royal Oak - Oakland Press

Motorists who use the exit and entrance ramps on southbound Interstate 75  at 11 Mile Road in Royal Oak are in for a change until next year.

Those ramps are set to close at 10 p.m. Friday as part of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s I-75 modernization plan.

Rob Morosi, an MDOT spokesman, said the southbound service drive to the freeway will also close from north of Gardenia Avenue to I-696 in Royal Oak.

“The closures will be in place until September 1, 2023,” he said. “The focus of the closure is to allow (Royal Oak) to work with us to replace the water main under the southbound service drive.”

Crews will also close the southbound I-75 exit to I-696 from Friday night to 5 a.m. Monday.

“Starting Monday morning the two-lane ramp that leads from south I-75 to I-696 will be reduced to one lane until February,” Morosi said.

That closure will allow MDOT crews to put in a new retaining wall along the southbound side of the freeway, he added.

Friday night marks the start of another stage in the ongoing rebuilding of I-75.

Still, there is some good news related to the freeway this weekend in Madison Heights.

MDOT is set to reopen the southbound I-75 exit ramp to 12 Mile Road, and the 12 Mile Road entrance ramp to south I-75, Morosi said.

“12 Mile Road will open with complete lanes in both directions” beneath the freeway by 10 p.m. Friday,  he said

However, 12 Mile will close again beneath the freeway in late February 2023 so MDOT can rebuild the southbound freeway bridge over the road.

Work continues on the north lanes of the freeway, Morosi said, and the north exit and entrance ramps at 12 Mile are scheduled to reopen in November.

In Royal Oak, the upcoming freeway exit and entrance ramp closures at 11 Mile, and the southbound service drive closure, are necessary for replacing the old water main beneath the service drive, said Holly Donoghue, city engineer.

“That water main has been on the list to be upgraded for a while,” she said, adding that the main supplies water to the neighborhoods in that area.

The water main covers a nearly 1-mile stretch beneath the service drive, from 500 feet north of Gardenia Avenue to Fourth Street.

Royal Oak is funding the $1.9 million cost of the project.

“We contracted with MDOT to do the work since they are redoing the service drive,” Donoghue said. “It wouldn’t make sense for us to go in and replace the water main after MDOT had redone the service drive.”

Royal Oak is paying MDOT for the costs of the design, construction and construction management on the project.

The water main is currently constructed with 6- and 8-inch pipes. Those pipes will all be replaced with pipes that are 12 inches in diameter, Donoghue said.
