Montclair, NJ – Montclair High School football team’s state playoff game with Ridgewood did not happen because an academically ineligible student was allowed to play for the Montclair High School football team this season due to an administrative oversight.
“A report is generated by the athletic director before the season for each of our sports teams that lists ineligible players, and we are actively investigating why the oversight occurred. We are incredibly disappointed for our team and very proud of the hard work and commitment of our players, head coach, and his staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Ponds on Friday.
Ponds did not mention that the athletic director Dr. Patrick (P.J.) Scarpello had already left the building.
New Hope-Solebury Schools approved the appointment of a new athletic director, Dr. Patrick Scarpello, at their Board of Directors meeting last Thursday.
In emails over the weekend and today, Dr. Ponds would not confirm Scarpello’s exit and only would say he could not discuss personnel matters.
