MIDDLE TENNESSEE 4, FLORIDA GULF COAST 2
» FGCU opened the weekend with a 21-3 win over South Dakota on Friday before facing off against the Blue Raiders on Saturday.
» The Blue Raiders came out firing on all cylinders and opened the game with two runs in the top of the first.
» An error by the third baseman on a ball hit hard by Lexi Cushing resulted in Summer Burgess scoring the game's first run. Later in the inning, Mia Marinakis walked and later scored on an RBI single to center field by Jocelynn De La Cruz.
» The game was then paused due to a rain delay in the top of the second inning. Six hours and 37 minutes later, Burgess reentered the batter's box to pick the game back up.
» Burgess hit MT's first triple of the season in the game's first at bat after the extended delay, but the Blue Raiders couldn't advance her 60 more feet to score.
» The Eagles cut the Blue Raider lead in half in their half of the third, as a stolen base turned into an unearned run due to an MT error.
» After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Eagles touched home with two outs in the sixth to tie the game at two runs apiece.
» Kelci Hill delivered the go-ahead RBI in the top of the seventh, scoring Nahri Tath-Slezak on a sacrifice fly after Tath-Slezak led off the inning with a single through the middle.
» The Blue Raiders scored a second insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Savannah Freeman checked in to steal second and third. When Shelby Sargent entered the game as a pinch runner and stole second in the next at bat, Freeman touched home on the play and represented MT's fourth run of the game.
» Amber Baldwin tossed her fourth complete game of the season in the 4-2 win and improved her record to 2-2.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 2, NEW MEXICO STATE 4
» New Mexico State entered Saturday evening's game riding a three-game win streak, with wins coming against Central Michigan, North Dakota and Florida Gulf Coast.
» The Aggies got on the board first with three runs in the second inning. A leadoff single followed by a triple resulted in the game's first run, and a two-out, two-RBI double made the score 3-0 in favor of New Mexico State after two innings.
» MT threatened in the third inning, as Hill doubled and advanced to third but was left on base.
» In the bottom of the fourth, New Mexico State extended its lead with a solo homer with two outs.
» After a scoreless fifth inning by both sides, the Blue Raiders got on the board when Claire Smith singled through the middle to score a pinch-running Jaya Herring. Herring checked in for De La Cruz, who led off the inning with a walk. The freshman stole two bases before touching home thanks to Smith's base hit.
» The Blue Raiders struck again when Burgess collected an RBI on a bases loaded walk. New Mexico State followed that up with a double play to end MT's chance to add more runs in the sixth.
» The Aggies were primed for an opportunity to add insurance in the bottom of the sixth, as they loaded the bases with no outs, but Corrina Dodd struck out three in a row to end the threat and give her team another chance to come from behind.
» MT failed to score in the seventh, so New Mexico State avenged its season opening loss to the Blue Raiders with a final score of 4-2 early Sunday morning.
QUOTES FROM THE BLUE RAIDERS
» Head Coach Jeff Breeden on the team's ability to score runs late in both games: "We have some good fight in us, and we don't quit. Those traits will pay big rewards for us as we get into conference play."
» Breeden on the challenge of playing late at night then playing a doubleheader Sunday: "It will be a quick turnaround for us. We'll get some food in them and sleep in in the morning. We'll leave the hotel around 10:15 in the morning and get ready to play a couple of games."
» Center fielder Kelci Hill on the go-ahead RBI in the win over Florida Gulf Coast: "Before my at bat, I told Amaya [Harris] that we had her back and we'd put some hits together for her, so that's what we did. I was really just trying to pick my team up and get Amber the win to start our day. It was a great team win, and hopefully we can carry that energy into tomorrow."
» Hill on the quick turnaround to prepare for tomorrow's doubleheader: "I think we just need to take the energy we've had so far this weekend and carry it over into tomorrow's two games. We definitely want to end the weekend with two more wins, and we'll do whatever it takes to get it done. Coach Hawkins and Coach Breeden have been talking about being able to execute our hitting, pitching and defense all together, and that's going to be our main focus moving on."
