Getting There: Will Northway Exit 1W be updated? - Times Union

Q: Has the traffic congestion around Northway Exit 1 West been reviewed lately? This is a chronic problem. Traffic routinely backs up to Exit 2 on weekends. I frequently encounter vehicles in the middle lane of Exit 1E slamming on their brakes and attempting to merge right to use Exit 1W. I thought the congestion would be alleviated when the toll booths were removed on Thruway Exit 24.

Q: Now that the tollbooths have been removed from Exit 24, will the Department of Transportation redo the westbound exit onto I-90 from I-87 and allow the two lanes to be used? Right now there is a single-lane crunch as cars come down I-87 seeing signs for two lanes that then squeeze into one then back out to two. This causes major backups and frustration as people barge in at the exit, and if this was well-signed with the two lanes, traffic here would be smoother.

A: The lane configuration of the Exit 1W to Exit 24 interchange between the Northway and the Thruway exists the way it does because of a task force that studied the location in the mid-1990s with the focus of reducing instances of trucks rolling over at high speeds, according to state Department of Transportation public information officer Bryan Viggiani. He did not say if there were plans to do another such study to update the interchange.

Members of the task force included the DOT, the Thruway Authority, the state police, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the Trucking Association of New York.

Additional safety enhancements recommended by the task force included two “Thruway Keep Right - Trucks Reduce Speed” signs with flashing beacons, an overhead sign showing the exit layout, a slower advisory speed for the ramp and truck rollover warning signs.

Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge: Cashless tolling will be implemented at the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge starting at midnight on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 1. Vehicles with E-ZPass will be automatically charged; vehicles without E-ZPass will be mailed a toll bill.

When the switch is made on the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, the Mid-Hudson Bridge will be the only remaining bridge under Bridge Authority control to have tollbooths. The Newburgh-Beacon, Bear Mountain and Rip Van Winkle bridges have already switched to cashless. The conversion is expected to be fully complete by March 2022.

Glenmont Roundabout: The Town of Bethlehem has completed binder course paving on the Glenmont Roundabout at Route 9W and Feura Bush/Glenmont roads. Top course paving is tentatively scheduled for the week of Nov. 29, weather permitting.
