WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Four members of the Black Team's pitching staff each worked two scoreless innings, helping their squad post 12 zeros on the day to win Purdue baseball's Black & Gold Series on Wednesday at Alexander Field.
Due to Tuesday's rain out coupled with more rain in the forecast for Thursday, the intrasquad series to close out the fall ball season was contested as a 12-inning mini tripleheader. Games were five, four and three innings in length. The Black Team won the first two games 2-0 and 1-0 before the finale ended in a scoreless stalemate.
Jack Firestone helped seal the 12-inning shutout for the Black Team with an excellent running catch on the warning track in left field on the final play of the day. He prevented Justin Walker Jr. from scoring from first base while taking away a likely RBI double from Kyle LaPlante.
Firestone also doubled and scored the lone run of the middle game. Evan Albrecht delivered the two-out RBI single in the second inning after Firestone connected for a two-bagger down the left field line.
Miles Simington and Zac Fascia joined Firestone with two hits over the course of the day. Fascia was also robbed of two more hits on nice defensive plays by Mason Gavre at first base and Ben Nisle in left field.
James Kulak, Ricky Castro, Joseph Whitman and Calvin Schapira all worked a pair of scoreless innings for the Black Team. Castro and Schapira both struck out three batters. Whitman closed out the Game 1 win and then worked a 1-2-3 inning to begin Game 2. Jett Jackson, Landon Weins, Will Tenuta and Eric Hildebrand also contributed to the 12 consecutive scoreless innings. Left-handers Kulak and Whitman both picked off a base runner.
Trent Johnson struck out six of the 13 batters he faced as the Gold Team's Game 1 starter. But walks and wild pitches allowed leadoff man Skyler Hunter to come around and score in the first inning against Johnson. Freshman Logan Danzeisen opened Game 3 with a 1-2-3 inning for the Gold Team.
Gavre reached base safely three times for the Gold Team with a single and two walks.
Albrecht made a nifty diving catch at shortstop for the final out of Game 2.
