Minneapolis - The Minnesota swimming and diving programs got their first taste of "competition" in the 2020-21 season Saturday morning, with the annual Maroon vs. Gold intrasquad meet taking place at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

Once the dust had settled, the Gold squad stood victorious by a margin of 334.5 - 260.5, due largely to an excellent finish where they captured first place finishes in six of the final seven events.

Stand-out performances were aplenty throughout the friendly competition, with excellent races coming from both familiar and new faces. Sophomores Grace Bennin and Maggie Summit helped lead the charge for the Gold team, as both turned in perfect performances with four first place finishes apiece. Newcomer Kaiser Neverman topped the Gold team's men's side with a trio of first place finishes of his own, followed closely by senior Cameron Kelley and junior Tom Donker, each of whom managed two podium topping finishes themselves.

Freshman Sawyer Grimes took charge for the Maroon squad, tallying a perfect three for three first place finishes through the match. Junior Max McHugh and sophomore Gavin Olson each topped the charts three times themselves through the meet as well, while Emma Linscott led the women's side with a pair of first place touches in the 100 and 200 butterfly events.

In the diving well, senior Sarah Bacon secured first in both the one-meter and three-meter events for the gold squad, while sophomore Jake Butler and senior Duncan Lester split the two events on the men's side.

"This was just step one of a lot of steps we need to take, but learning how to race, compete and be a team at a competition again was huge for us," said Head Coach Kelly Kremer. "Looking at our newcomers, I thought Kaiser and Sawyer really put together excellent swims, especially for newcomers. The women's side has a lot of potential sitting in there as well, and I'm excited to see what they can do."

When asked how it felt to be back in the water, senior captains Brittany Horn and Eitan Yudashkin were both all smiles. "I think both teams did really well. It was definitely good to be racing again and I think everyone felt that," said Horn. Yudashkin echoed a similar tune, saying "It just felt really awesome being back in something that feels somewhat like a normal meet. There was really good energy on both sides, and it feels like there are a lot of positive things to look forward to this season. I'm just so happy to be back to competing, finally."
