FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Alabama men's golf team carded a season-low round of 5-under par 279 in the opening round of the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate on Sunday afternoon. The Crimson Tide will enter Monday's second round in 10th overall.
Three UA golfers are among the top-25 individuals, as Davis Shore (T12th), Wilson Furr (T21st) and Thomas Ponder (T21st) all carded below par rounds to lead the way.
The 14-team event which features all Southeastern Conference teams is being held on the par 71, 7,221-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club North course.
ROUND ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Shore finished the front nine at even par, before collecting four birdies and a bogey on the back nine to end the day with a 3-under par 68.
- Furr and Thomas each carded rounds of 2-under par 69 in day one. Furr's day was highlighted by collecting birdies in four of his final five holes.
- Canon Claycomb is in a tie for 55th at 2-over par 73.
LIPSCOMB OUT
- Tyler Lipscomb did not play as he was pulled out of the tournament to an illness. Transfer David Morgan will arrive at the team hotel Sunday evening and will replace Lipscomb in the tournament for Monday's second round.
- "Tyler woke up this morning with several symptoms, so we pulled him out for precautionary reasons," head coach Jay Seawell said. "He received a Rapid Antigen test for Covid-19 this morning which came back negative and this evening we received notice that his PCR test was negative as well. We want to take the utmost precautions for everyone's safety so he will be out for the remainder of the tournament. I am thankful for our medical staff and the Vanderbilt medical staff for helping Tyler."
FUN FACT
- After combining to shoot six-over par as a team in the front nine, the Crimson Tide responded to shoot 10-under on the back nine to end the day with its season-best single-round total.
- "I am proud of how our guys responded to the adversity we faced," Seawell said. "For us to get this news in the van on the way to the course and just end the day with everyone contributing was definitely a positive."
