ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan Baseball team used two big innings to pour on the runs Sunday (April 11) as the Wolverines toppled visiting Ohio State, 16-7, to win the game and weekend series from the Buckeyes at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan broke open a 3-1 lead with a four-run fifth inning before leaving no doubt with a nine-run eighth inning to win a game played in steady rain and windy conditions.
Ohio State held a brief 1-0 lead in the second inning as a leadoff walk was followed by a groundout and an RBI single to left from Scottie Seymour.
Michigan (15-7, 15-7 Big Ten) answered in the third as a steady rain came down and affected OSU starter Jack Neely (1-1), who lost all composure, walking two and hitting a batter to load the bases with one out, to force the Buckeyes to the bullpen. Griffin Mazur and Benjamin Sems followed with RBI singles for a 2-1 lead, but Ohio State reliever Patrick Murphy got a pair of key strikeouts to limit the damage.
In the fourth inning, the Buckeyes had a chance as Seymour laced a double to the gap in left-center, but an unbelievable relay throw from Jordon Rogers cut down the final out at the plate. Rogers hit Sems, with the shortstop delivering a perfect throw to Mazur at home.
Rogers then gave U-M a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the frame as he laced a two-out RBI to right-center.
Michigan broke the game open in the fifth with four runs to make it 7-1. Christian Molfetta led off with a long home run on the first pitch of the frame. With the bases loaded, Clark Elliott laced a two-run double to the gap in left-center and Tito Flores drove home another run with a sacrifice fly.
Ohio State (13-9, 13-9 Big Ten) scored a run in the sixth inning against starter Jacob Denner, but Joe Pace came out of the bullpen to get a key strikeout with a runner on third. However, the game got tense as OSU rallied in the seventh.
A misplayed fly ball to right went for a leadoff triple and that was followed by an error and a walk as the Buckeyes made it a 7-3 game. Pace stiffened and shut down the middle of the OSU lineup with a strikeout, fly ball and grounder to keep the lead intact.
Michigan then scored nine times in the eighth inning, rapping seven hits with four walks against three OSU relievers. The impact play was a titanic three-run home run from Danny Zimmerman while Cam Hart, Molfetta and Mazur also delivered run-scoring hits in the frame.
Molfetta finished the day with three hits, while Rogers, Mazur, Jimmy Obertop, Zimemrman and Elliott all had multiple hits in the wolverines' 17-hit attack.
Denner (2-0) picked up the win despite having to battle through 36 first-inning pitches and early rain. The lefty threw 5.2 innings during which he scattered five hits while striking out four batters.
ESPNU will rebroadcast today's game on Monday night (April 12) at 7 p.m. Michigan will be back in action next Friday through Sunday (April 16-18) when the Wolverines travel to Minneapolis for a three-game set at Minnesota.
