TAMPA — A 58-year-old man has died from injuries he sustained when he was struck earlier this week by a driver experiencing a medical emergency, troopers say.

The pedestrian was struck on Tuesday and died in the hospital on Friday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. His name was not released.

The incident took place about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday on the northbound Interstate 275 exit ramp onto E Fletcher Avenue. The 58-year-old man was walking along the left shoulder of the ramp, troopers say. An 84-year-old Lutz woman was driving a car north in the inside left turn lane.

Then the 84-year-old woman suffered a medical emergency, according to the Highway Patrol, struck the 58-year-old man and crashed into a roadway sign.

The 58-year-old man was taken to the hospital. The medical condition of the 84-year-old woman was not disclosed. She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The Highway Patrol did not release the names of anyone involved in the crash due to its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, an amendment to Florida’s Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but deprives the public of information that had long been available under the state’s public records laws.
