Season Ends For Beach Volleyball In 3-2 Loss To North Florida - FGCU Athletics

panggilansaja.blogspot.com
DELAND, Fla. - The FGCU beach volleyball team (17-15) nearly completed a comeback from an 0-2 deficit, but ultimately saw its season end with a 3-2 loss to North Florida (23-10) in the loser's bracket final of the ASUN tournament at the Cooper Beach courts on Sunday.

"The match was exactly what we thought it would be - two evenly matched teams battling point-for-point in every single set," FGCU head coach Chris Sweat said. "All the credit to UNF for making a couple more big plays than we did and pulling out the win. The atmosphere was something I know everybody missed, and it was great to be back at the conference championship. It was definitely not the outcome that we wanted, but we will learn from it, grow from it and be back hungrier than ever next year."

After North Florida swept the four and five pairs, Maddison Parmelly and Lexie Hamilton got the comeback started with a 21-11, 21-15 win at No. 3 before Kayla Whetstone and Kacie Johnson evened up the match with a 21-15, 21-15 win at No. 2.

A short time later, Giovanna Borgiotti and Kirstine Garder forced a third set at No. 1 as the two teams split 21-19 decisions. The Ospreys won the final set 15-9, though, as they moved on to the championship, where they knocked off top-seeded, No. 16 Stetson 3-2 to claim the title.

Parmelly (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall Heath HS) and Hamilton (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS/UNCW) were one of five pairs selected to the all-tournament team. They were one of three FGCU pairs to go 3-1 over the weekend, joining Whetstone/Johnson and Rosales/Banz, while pushing their season record to 17-13 together.

Whetstone and Johnson (Frisco, Texas/Lebanon Trail HS) finished a team-best 23-8 together this year while Rosales (Wilmington, N.C/Eugene Ashley HS) and Banz (Cambridge, Ontario/St. Benedict Catholic Secondary/Hawaii) went 13-12.

Whetstone (Arlington, Texas/Arlington Lamar HS), meanwhile, finishes her career with a program-record 67 victories. Borgiotti (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall HS) also became just the third Eagle to tally 60 career victories, finishing third-best all-time with a 60-52 record.
