In a heartbreaking and painful night at Conte Forum, UMass-Lowell rallied from deficits of 4-1 and 5-4 to top Boston College 6-5 in double overtime in the Hockey East semifinal.
It’s tough to wrap our minds around everything that happened in this one but to summarize:
-Boston College scored a goal in overtime that appeared to win the game, but was disallowed due to offsides:
-BC led 4-1 with 9:35 remaining in the game, when Reid Stefanson scored his 5th goal of the season to draw the River Hawks within two.
-Lowell pulled to within one with just 4:27 to play on an Andre Lee goal, then struck again 1:06 later to tie the game 4-4 through Lucas Condotta.
-This was the first time Spencer Knight had given up four goals for BC all season.
-The Eagles drew a power play in the final three minutes of the game, and seemed poised to make the power play unit the hero after a year where it struggled so much, when Marc McLaughlin scored with 2:07 to go to put the Eagles back out front.
-But Lowell tied it right back up with the goalie pulled 41 seconds later, on a ripped shot from the point by Anthony Baxter.
-Matt Brown’s double overtime winner came at exactly 12:00 of the second overtime.
BC’s Hockey East tournament run is now over, and attention turns to Selection Sunday, where the Eagles will certainly make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2016, and are still in pretty good shape to be a 1 seed (or at minimum a 2 seed) in one of the regionals in the East.
We await that NCAA tournament return, but for now have to stew on a truly painful result on home ice.
