WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Ohio State men’s basketball team fell 75-72 in overtime to Oral Roberts Friday in the First Round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette.
The Buckeyes led by as many as eight points in the first half but trailed the Golden Eagles at the break 36-33. The teams battled back and forth over the final 20 minutes before Oral Roberts tied the game at 64-all at the end of regulation on a pair of free throws.
Duane Washington Jr. had a shot at the regulation buzzer that was off the mark.
In overtime, the Golden Eagles took the lead and held a 3-point edge with seconds remaining when Washington Jr. again had a chance to tie the game from 3-point range but it was not to be for the 21-10 Buckeyes.
Sophomore E.J. Liddell led Ohio State with 23 points and 14 rebounds while Washington Jr. also recorded a double double with 18 points and 10 boards.
Ohio State had the advantage in field goals made (29-25) but Oral Roberts made up the difference by hitting 11-of-35 3-pointers and 14-of-18 at the foul line. The Buckeyes, who held a 49-32 rebounding advantage, made 5-of-23 from distance and 9-of-18 at the line.
