In our show "Correspondence", we explore how the world is coping with the twists and turns of 2021, amid the consequences of Covid-19 and beyond. FRANCE 24 brings you a selection of original reports from our correspondents and teams around the globe. Our reporters went to Brazil, Lebanon, Iraq and Niger.
Our reports:
>>In Brazil, President Bolsonaro just appointed a new health minister - the fourth in the space of a year - in a bid to get a grip on another surge in Covid cases. But among medics, there’s anger and despair. Fanny Lothaire and Lucinda Elliot met some of them at a ward in a hospital in Sao Paolo.
>>In Lebanon, 10 years after the start of the Syrian war, our reporters Mayssa Awad and James Andre went to a refugee camp in the north of the country, where women widowed by the conflict struggle to raise their children with little means.
>>In Iraq, where Pope Francis recently made a historic visit, the Christian community has shrunk as the region has been ravaged by war and violence against minorities. It numbered 1.5 million at the turn of the millennium but is now estimated at less than a third of that. Many have fled abroad but others have sought sanctuary in Erbil. Lucile Wasserman and Jack Hewson report.
>>In Niger, one of the poorest nations in the world, women give birth to an average of seven children each. Economists say high fertility is stunting economic growth and development. In Niamey, our reporters Cyril Payen and Amar Al Hameedawi followed an imam who is trying to change mentalities.
