As we have now passed the one-year milestone of navigating life in a global pandemic, we have been confronted with a seemingly endless barrage of tragedies and challenges across the world.  Last June, Gibson Dunn reaffirmed our commitment to combating racism by launching our Racial Justice and Equity Initiative and formalizing our pre-existing efforts in this space.  We are proud of the firm’s response to confronting racial injustice and hateful incidents impacting our communities.  And as the hateful incidents continue to tragically grow in number, so grows the legitimate anger, hurt, distrust, fear and public outrage of those in our community who have been, and continue to be, targeted.  We stood in solidarity with our Black American community then, and we must now stand in solidarity with our Asian American community given the recent surge in anti-Asian racially-motivated attacks.

Stop AAPI Hate recently released data showing that between March 2000 and February 2021, nearly 3,800 firsthand accounts of anti-Asian incidents were reported.  Sadly, there continues to be an uptick in attacks against the Asian community, and more specifically, disturbing attacks against the elderly and most vulnerable.  Click here to read the newly-issued Stop AAPI Hate report.  We must do all that we can to ensure that such injustices will be prevented moving forward.

Fighting for a more inclusive and equitable future is always a work in progress, and as we continue to navigate the shifting social landscape, Gibson Dunn remains steadfast in our commitment to combating racial injustices while taking affirmative measures to engender greater equity among the most marginalized.  We must recognize and address anti-Asian bias and racial intolerance.  We must ensure that the Asian community is included in our efforts to combat racism in all of its ugly forms.  And finally, we must amplify the diverse experiences of Asian Americans – like many other communities, theirs is not a monolithic experience and as such, we must take the time to understand the deep and painful history of discrimination faced by Asian Americans, and to stand in solidarity with the community to fight for a more inclusive and equitable future.

The firm is proud to have longstanding partnerships with many Asian American community organizations, including but not limited to the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), a New York-based national organization founded in 1974 which aims to protect and promote the civil rights of Asian Americans, and Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles (AAAJ-LA), the largest Asian American legal and civil rights organization in the country.  We will make monetary contributions to these organizations and others like Stop AAPI Hate which are on the frontlines combating anti-Asian sentiments.  Katie Marquart is also working alongside our Asian American partners in an effort led by Debra Wong Yang to further engage in this important work.  We encourage you to join in our efforts as they continue to grow and scale in size.

Gibson Dunn remains committed to championing racial justice and equity, and to taking a stand against racial intolerance. We will continue pushing the needle on behalf of all marginalized communities, and to combat hatred and discrimination wherever we see it.
