Reggie Roberson Jr. had quite literally just made another spectacular leaping catch. He came down, tried to get the defender to miss. Then, seemingly without contact, he crumple to the ground. SMU’s top receiver was tended to by trainers. Then he came out of the game, being assisted off the field.
Roberson was having his best game of the season, and arguably his best game in an SMU uniform. He had 243 yards in the air, including a 70-yard and 80-yard touchdown. He probably would have had more on that catch, had he not been hurt.
T.J. McDaniel hurt on game’s first play
SMU struggled to run the ball against Memphis. And it was dealt a tough blow in the very first play of the game. Starting RB TJ McDaniel rushed the ball four yards. But immediately after the play was dead, QB Shane Buechele was waving the trainers over to tend to McDaniel.
McDaniel did not return to the game. He was helped off the field by trainers, and didn’t put any pressure on his left leg. He went into the medical tent, then took a cart into the locker room.
Mike Williams opts back in
After announcing he’d opted out earlier this season, SMU senior DT Mike Williams was available to play on Saturday. He had opted back in weeks ago, a team spokesman said, but had to go through the acclimation process until he was available to play.
Williams played his first four seasons at Stanford, and previously said he intended to return to play for SMU in 2021. In addition to Williams, SMU welcomed Arkansas transfer T.Q. Jackson, who just became eligible this week. He was mostly used as a punt returner.
