HISTORY WITH THE TAR HEELS
The Blue Devils and Tar Heels meet for the 94th time as North Carolina leads the all-time series with a 79-13-1 mark. This will be the second meeting between the two programs this season after the Blue Devils fell in their home opener, 4-0, to the Tar Heels on Sunday, Oct. 4. The last time Duke won in Chapel Hill was Sept. 27, 2013 when the Blue Devils pulled out a 3-2 shootout victory.
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA
Heading into Sunday's rivalry contest, the Tar Heels hold a 5-1 overall record with a 3-1 mark in ACC play during the abbreviated 2020 season. North Carolina's one loss came to Louisville, snapping its 47-game win streak.
Junior Erin Matson paces the Tar Heels' offense with 14 points from five goals and four assists. Matson tallied the game-winning goal in North Carolina's 1-0 win over Syracuse on Friday night. In the cage, senior Amanda Hendry has made 21 saves and carries a 0.86 goals against average.
DUKE SET TO HOST 2025 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
After Duke University and the Durham Sports Commission jointly submitted a bid, Duke has been selected to host the 2025 NCAA Field Hockey Championship at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. This will be the first time in school history Duke has hosted the event.
BLUE DEVILS EDGED BY SYRACUSE
Following an open weekend due to Boston College postponing its next five games, Syracuse and Duke were able to reschedule its conference game. Duke saw its strongest offensive effort of the season last Saturday in a neutral site battle with Syracuse in Virginia Beach, Va., but the Blue Devils fell short, 4-3.
Sophomore Hannah Miller recorded her first goal of the 2020 campaign, putting Duke on the board in the fourth minute. The Orange went on to score the next two goals, but Miller's second tally of the game tied the game, 2-2, at halftime. Syracuse took a 3-2 lead in the 43rd minute, but Duke responded less than a minute later as freshman Alayna Burns notched her first collegiate goal and was assisted by freshman Darcy Bourne. Duke fought until the end, but a Syracuse goal in the 53rd minute would seal the 4-3 decision.
UP NEXT
The Blue Devils are scheduled to play a pair of games with Wake Forest, beginning with a road contest in Winston-Salem on Friday, Oct. 23, and followed by a home contest on Sunday, Oct. 25. Both games will be televised as Friday's will be shown on RSN and Sunday's on ACCN.
