Get ready for detours as the Iowa Department of Transportation starts reconstruction Tuesday of I-35's Exit 92 interchange at East First Street in Ankeny.
The exit, along with East First Street between Southeast Delaware Avenue and Southeast Creekview Drive, will remain closed until early November, barring weather-related construction delays.
Drivers who usually would make use of the exit will be detoured to Exit 93 on the Northeast 36th Street Interchange, where they can then travel south. Cars on East First Street trying to access I-35 will be detoured north on U.S. 69/North Ankeny Boulevard, turning on Northeast 36th Street to reach the interchange.
The East First Street Interchange will be reconfigured into a diverging diamond, according to IDOT. This will speed up traffic, which has slowed in recent years because of congestion resulting from Ankeny's rapidly growing population.
In a diverging diamond interchange, cars exit the interstate on a road to the left of traffic traveling the opposite direction, and then cross back onto the right through a stop light. This reduces the number of cars that have to wait for traffic signals. An Iowa DOT video shows how the planned interchange will work.
In addition to reconfiguring the interchange, construction crews will grade the roadbed, pave new ramps and install new traffic signals, lights and signage.
