The Redstone, a 24-unit condominium in the Russian Hill neighborhood, was designed by Henry Clay Smith, an early 20th-century architect known for his skill at building large structures on San Francisco’s hilly terrain.

Russian Hill is just south of the Marina District and within walking distance of tourist attractions like Fisherman’s Wharf and the famously twisty Lombard Street. Downtown San Francisco and the financial district are a 10-minute drive from the property.

Size: 900 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,388

Indoors: This unit, on the building’s first floor, was updated in 2019 by Benjamin Dhong Interiors.

The front door opens to an entry hall painted glossy black, with an abstract floral wallpaper on the ceiling. A small chandelier and mirrors framing the door brighten the space.

Through an arched doorway, an open living area with exposed ceiling beams runs the length of the space. A fireplace anchors a sitting area on one side of the room; on the other, there is space for a dining table and chairs. French doors with antique brass hardware open to a private patio, and two additional windows bring in sunlight and the greenery of the outdoor space.

The rear half of the living area is devoted to the kitchen. To bring in light, Mr. Dhong added antique mirrors to the white cabinet doors. Two light fixtures hang over a center island that contains the oven. The appliances are stainless steel.

A hallway off the foyer leads to the bedroom and bathroom. The dove-gray bedroom accommodates a king-size bed; the bathroom has a combination tub and shower.

Outdoor space: The unit’s private patio runs alongside the building, with a high wall sheltering a garden on one side and a brick-paved area on the other, with space for outdoor dining. The building has two common spaces: a penthouse-level clubhouse where residents can hold events, and a roof deck offering expansive views of the city.

Taxes: $15,238 (estimated), plus a $727 monthly homeowner association fee

This house is in the North Redondo section of Los Angeles, slightly inland from the beach and marina, in a neighborhood of single-family homes within easy commuting distance of the area’s numerous aerospace and engineering companies. North Redondo is also the western terminus of the Green Line, a section of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system that carries passengers across South Los Angeles and its suburbs. Los Angeles International Airport is about 15 minutes north by car, while downtown Los Angeles is a 30-minute drive.

Size: 1,320 square feet

Price per square foot: $947

Indoors: The owner of this house is a designer, and his firm, Slobri Design + Studio, supervised a recent remodel that aimed to modernize the space while retaining a midcentury aesthetic.

The front yard has a grass lawn framed by succulents. A concrete path leads from the street to a bright yellow front door that opens into the living room.

The living area has space for a seating area as well as a dining table. One wall is paneled with wood reclaimed from the home’s original hardwood floors, and sliding-glass doors open to the rear deck. This space, like the rest of the house, has bamboo floors.

To the left of the front door is a galley kitchen with a graphic red-and-white-tile backsplash and new appliances. For additional counter space and seating, a floating breakfast bar is anchored to one wall.

The owner converted the hallway off the living space into a home office, brightened by small rectangular windows along one wall. At the end of the hall is the master bedroom, which has an electric fireplace, sliding-glass doors to the rear deck and an en suite bathroom with slate floors and a built-in vanity.

Another hallway, to the right of the front door, leads to two guest rooms large enough for full-size beds. One has an en suite bathroom; the other has access to a bathroom off the hall.

Outdoor space: The redwood deck in back is raised off the ground and has a pergola for shade. Beyond the deck is a patio, paved in concrete and gravel, with a built-in barbecue. The attached garage has space for one car.

Taxes: $15,877 (estimated)

Sebastopol, about 60 miles north of San Francisco, is beloved for its small-town feel and easy proximity to the wineries of Sonoma County. By car, it’s about 20 minutes west of Santa Rosa and about 20 minutes east of the Pacific Ocean. This house is a 10-minute drive from the center of the city, where small art galleries and independent restaurants are the main draw.

The property includes two guest or office quarters and a number of walking paths. The owners, who bought it in 2018, undertook a remodel that included updating the electrical and plumbing systems.

Size: 1,718 square feet

Price per square foot: $727

Indoors: Two decorative gates separate the property from the street: one for pedestrians, where a footpath leads to the front door of the house, and one for cars, where a gravel driveway stops in front of the garage, to the side of the house.

A short set of steps leads to the front door, which opens into the living room. Windows on either side of the front door and glass doors to a side patio flood the space with natural light. The floors are ash-toned hardwood.

On the right side of the room, two glass doors lead to an office with built-in bookcases and white wood-trimmed walls. A doorway on the left side of the room leads to the kitchen and dining areas. In the dining space, a bench is built into a wide window for extra seating, and an interior cutout looks into the kitchen.

The kitchen cabinets are white, with white-marble counters. The appliances are stainless steel and were added during the renovation.

A hallway off the kitchen leads to the two bedrooms and the bathroom. Nearest to the kitchen is the guest room, which has space for a full-size bed. At the back of the house is the master bedroom, where two skylights are set into a wood-beamed cathedral ceiling. The master has its own sitting area and a fireplace, as well as direct access to a patio with a hot tub.

Between the two bedrooms is a bathroom with a large walk-in shower that has a river-rock floor.

Outdoor space: The kitchen and the office in the main house have access to paths that wind around the property. Off the master bedroom is a partially covered stone patio with a wood-framed hot tub.

To the side of the house is a garage that has been converted into living space. Residents and guests park on the driveway, but have access to an electric charging port inside the garage.

Behind the main house is an old pilot house, moved onto the property by a previous owner who worked as a ferry captain. Underneath it is a wine cellar with wall coverings made from old newspapers.

The landscaping is varied: Succulents share space with fruit trees and a vegetable garden. The walking paths weaving through the outdoor spaces are paved in stone and, in some sections, bordered by low rock walls.

Taxes: $15,613 (estimated)
