Q: During one of our warm days recently, I was riding my motorcycle and came to a stop at the end of the new Exit 3 ramp on the Northway. I was in the left-most lane, waiting to turn left (north, towards the airport) onto Rt. 155. And I waited, and waited, and ...
Although I couldn't see any indicative pavement seams, I'm guessing that there is some embedded sensor at the end of that ramp, with input to the new traffic light there. And I'm further guessing that, as is all too often the case, that sensor is not registering a medium-sized motorcycle (and rider).
Can you confirm that there is a sensor at that location? And, if so, can you direct me to the appropriate governmental body, so that I can ask that the sensor's sensitivity be increased?

A: Bryan Viggianni, public information officer for the state Department of Transportation, said that the DOT dispatched a signal crew to that traffic light. The crew adjusted the traffic light sensors and associated hardware to make it more sensitive to motorcycles, he said.
Many DOT traffic signals use pressure sensors placed in the pavement ahead of the signal. Others, however, use microwave sensors hanging from the traffic signal pole, which use radar to detect approaching drivers.
Q: I am not sure if this question has been asked in the past. I have always been curious as to why roundabouts have been done at the Route 4 intersections of Route 151 and at Mannix Road. However, nothing has been done to alleviate congestion at the junction of 3rd Avenue Extension. With Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Movie Theater and other shops and eateries located there, this area can get quite congested. Does DOT have any plans for this area?
—Dick Ketzer, Averill Park
A: Viggianni said that there is no work planned at that intersection.
Planned work: The DOT will close the on-ramp from Broadway in Menands to I-787 North starting Tuesday. Crews will resurface the pavement and add a connector between the ramp and the Mohawk-Hudson Hike-Bike Trail.
A detour route will be posted, taking drivers north on Broadway (Route 32) to Route 378 East and get on I-787 North at the Exit 7 interchange. The ramp will be closed through June 25.
DOT crews will also perform rehabilitation maintenance on the Exit 3 off-ramp from I-787 North to the South Mall Expressway. The ramp will be closed June 3 through Sept. 3. Motorists will be detoured across the Dunn Memorial Bridge towards the Rensselaer Train Station. They can then make a right turn onto Broadway and take the next right back over the Dunn bridge towards the South Mall Expressway.
