New York firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze on Sunday night that started in a furniture store across the street from the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building in Harlem, the authorities said.

The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. in a store on the corner of 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard, and was contained by 10:30 p.m., a spokesman for the Fire Department said. There were no reported injuries.

“The big plume of smoke is how I found out,” said Jeffrey Meregildo, 30, who lives on 129th Street. “I’m pretty sure people that are a block away can smell the fire.”

A video the Fire Department posted on Twitter appears to show that the fire also consumed Lazarus, a children’s clothing store that is one of the oldest shops on 125th Street.

“Everyone has memories of shopping at Lazarus when they were kids,” Mr. Meregildo said. “You go there for your school uniforms; it was one of those Harlem staples. Any clothing store that replaces it would have to cater to the old neighborhood, not a J. Crew or something.”

Lazarus is over 50 years old and underwent a major renovation in 2001 that included moving further west on 125th Street.

Also named Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, 125th Street has served as a main street of sorts for the Harlem neighborhood.

The street is home to the Apollo Theater, the Corn Exchange building and the structure formally known as Hotel Theresa, or the “Waldorf of Harlem,” where Fidel Castro stayed during his visit to New York in 1960.
