Earlier this week, the Cincinnati Bengals released Andy Dalton, making him a free agent this offseason. Following his release, Dalton addressed his sudden exit from Cincinnati.
“I received a lot of support through my career,” Dalton said, via the team’s official website. “I felt it ever since yesterday when they announced it. I’m not going to say I was under-appreciated, or I think I deserve more than I’m getting. There’s been a lot of good stuff that has happened in the last ten years.
From 2011-2019, Dalton served as the starting quarterback of the Bengals. Even though most people would look at his body of work as a disappointment, he helped Cincinnati advance to the postseason in four straight seasons to begin his career.
Nevertheless, the Bengals’ decision to select Joe Burrow with the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft sealed Dalton’s fate. The veteran signal-caller knew that Cincinnati was going to draft Burrow, regardless of his status with the franchise.
“I knew they were going to take Joe,” Dalton said. “Regardless whether I was on the team or not, I would have reached out. He had a great college career and he went No. 1 and I just wanted to give him my congratulations on him getting drafted where he did. And tell him he’s going to a good team.”
Even though Cincinnati took his replacement, Dalton called Burrow to welcome him to the Bengals. Now, Dalton is preparing to find a new team to play for in the 2020 season. At the same time, he’s thankful for the years he had with the organization that drafted him in 2011.
