The 24 year old has landed a move to the German Bundesliga outfit to play European football for the first time in his career, pocketing Saints £20million.
Tella, who scored 17 goals in the Championship on loan at Burnley last season, has been a well-liked member of the Saints dressing room since his first inclusion.
Signed from Arsenal on a free transfer as a teenager, Tella’s development is a success story for the club – and he has taken to the internet to make that known.
On his social media, Tella said: “After a great seven years at this club, my time here has come to an end.
“It feels like only yesterday when I first walked into the training ground, not knowing what the future would hold for me.
“The club which took me in at 17 years old and made me feel at home straight away. From my first day, I felt welcomed by everyone.
“I would like to say a massive thank you to all the staff. You have helped me through so much and I will always be grateful.
“After a major injury, you all gave me the confidence and the belief that I’d get back to my best and be able to live my dream of being a professional footballer.
“A huge thank you to all the coaches who have helped me here along my journey. I know I’ve not always been the easiest to work with but you never gave up on me.
“Even when I had given up on myself, you assured me that my time will come and that I’d get an opportunity.
“From my first game on trial against Brighton to my last game against Plymouth, you have all played a massive part in my development from a boy to a man and for that I will be eternally grateful.”
He added: “Also, a big thank you to my teammates. From my first time training with first team, I was welcomed and accepted straight away.
“You allowed me to play with confidence and brought the best out in me. I’ve made some great friends and had some great memories which I’m sure will last me a lifetime!
“And finally a massive thank you to the fans. The love and support I received from all of you will remain in my heart forever.
"I know my performances haven’t always been great, but you still supported me throughout all of it.
“I felt proud being able to walk out at St Mary’s and having the opportunity to represent this amazing club.
“I wish everyone associated with the club nothing but the best. I’m sure that the club will get to where they belong. Keep the faith and believe. I’ll be watching and supporting you.”
