I-459 southbound lanes closed near Hwy 280 exit after crash with multiple fatalities - WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A multi-vehicle crash has closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 459 Tuesday evening, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The crash happened just after 8 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities with the Rocky Ridge Fire Department confirm the incident involved multiple vehicles over both sides of the interstate, including several people being extricated from vehicles in addition to fatalities. Officials have not yet confirmed the number of people involved.

All southbound lanes of Interstate 459 near mile marker 18 in Jefferson County are closed at the location because of the crash, and authorities say they will remain closed for an extended period of time.

Troopers with ALEA will continue to investigate.
