Lego plans to occupy the new office at 1001 Boylston St. in phases starting in mid-2025, after more than a half-century of having its North American base in Enfield, Conn. The new Boston offices will total more than 100,000 square feet of space.
The company has a Lego Discovery Center for children in Boston, with daily tickets starting at $27.
"We believe that a modern, collaborative work environment will help creativity and innovation thrive," stated Skip Kodak, president of Lego Group's Americas operations, in a prepared statement. “We’re incredibly excited to be moving to a new location with such a rich history."
In Enfield, Lego shares its Print Drive Road facility with Coca Cola Beverages Northeast, the soft-drink company's dedicated bottler covering New England and upstate New York.
When announced this past January, the Lego relocation represented the biggest corporate exoduses to Boston since General Electric moved its headquarters there in 2016 under former CEO Jeff Immelt, and Alexion Pharmaceuticals the following year while maintaining a significant presence in New Haven. GE went on to downsize its Boston headquarters in advance of splitting into three companies under current CEO Larry Culp Jr.
Based in Billund Denmark, Lego is the world's largest toy company with more than 27,000 employees, revenue of $9.5 billion in 2022 and earnings above $2 billion that year. The company currently has 740 employees in Enfield, of some 3,000 in the United States.
Hasbro is the largest toy company based in the United States, with its headquarters in Pawtucket, R.I. Connecticut's largest homegrown toy company is Melissa & Doug, which chose to stay in Wilton in choosing a new headquarters office a few years ago.
Lego is building a new factory in Richmond, Va., where in time it will employ more than 1,750 people, with a new plant to follow in Vietnam that will employ as many as 4,000 people. Lego has also been expanding factories in Mexico, China and Hungary.
