Aston Villa full-back Lucas Digne has emerged as a possible target for Benfica, according to reports in Portugal.
The Frenchman has been with Villa since signing from Everton in January 2022. He was a regular starter at the start of the season under Steven Gerrard, but has found game time harder to come by under Unai Emery.
In fact, the defender hasn’t started a game since the 2-0 win over his former club Everton back in February. Digne has come on as a substitute in all but four of the subsequent Premier League games.
Benfica are on the lookout for a new left-back this summer, following the confirmed departure of Alejandro Grimaldo, who will join German side Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer in the summer. Portuguese paper Correio da Manha (via SportWitness ) report that Digne is one of the ‘options’ as a potential replacement.

The report adds that the player himself would be ‘receptive’ to the possibility of making the move to Portugal, although it seems that Villa may not be as open to a move going ahead. Digne still has three years remaining on his deal at Villa Park, meaning that they could demand a decent fee should they decide to cash in in the summer.
Villa spent a fee of around £25m on the 29-year-old when they completed the transfer. A price nearing that could prove to be too expensive for Benfica should they decide to act on their interest in the summer.
It’s not the first time that Digne has been linked with a move away from the club this summer. French side Nice are said to be showing an interest in the full-back as they search for potential replacements for Jean-Clair Todibo and Khephren Thuram.
It was also previously claimed back in January that Emery is not entirely ‘convinced’ by Digne and could search for another left-back during the summer window.
