Thanks, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey.
Can’t wait to find out who you recommend next to be U.S. Attorney. Is Monica Cannon Grant available?
Warren and Markey should be held accountable for giving our state U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins, a call that has spectacularly flamed out and stands as one of the worst appointments Joe Biden has ever made.
Even after Rollins – at the time the Suffolk District Attorney – harassed a motorist in a parking lot and pulled a nutty on a TV reporter outside her home, Markey and Warren still thought it would be great to promote her to the Justice Department’s top Massachusetts law enforcement post.
The two Massachusetts senators put out a statement on Wednesday calling the Rollins reports “deeply troubling” and agreeing with her decision to resign.
But the reality is they should have known that Rollins would be a disaster. There were plenty of warning signs.
Rollins is resigning in disgrace on Friday amid damning dual reports by the Department of Justice Inspector General and the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, which found she flagrantly violated the Hatch Act and abused her power to sabotage the Suffolk District Attorney race, attend a D.N.C. fundraiser, lie to investigators and violate several other Department of Justice ethics rules and laws.
These were not minor transgressions. Investigators called them some of the worst abuses of power they had ever seen. Rollins especially seemed driven to take down Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden for some reason.
Rollins exits deeply embarrassed but her political career is probably not over. Because she resigned, she won’t face discipline and she won’t be prosecuted for lying. She plans to speak out later this week and no doubt will go down swinging.
Even Dianne Wilkerson tried to rehabilitate herself and she stuck bribes in her bra.
Maybe Rollins runs for District Attorney again and challenges her nemesis, Hayden. Or maybe she tries higher, for the U.S. Senate.
Rollins was the first black woman to lead the U.S. Attorney’s office and has arch enemies in the Republican Party. She could follow her lawyer’s advice and say nothing but can easily try to portray her resignation as political payback by right-wingers and the old boys network.
She could go on a media charm offensive with friendly outlets to go along with her press conference. Maybe contact those Globe reporters and editors who published her allegations against Hayden before his primary contest – allegations that could have tilted the race.
There’s no doubt, though, that Rollins will be future political fodder for Republicans and serve as a warning to other U.S. Attorneys to stay out of politics.
And Rollins is yet another shameful embarrassment for Biden, who could be damaged by the Special Counsel and Inspector General reports in his 2024 race. Republicans can point to Rollins as an example of what happens when Biden appoints ethically sketchy liberal prosecutors to get ahold of prosecutorial power.
