Tottenham exit 'increasingly likely' for defender Conte doesn't trust, as four Premier League sides eye deal - TEAMtalk

Four Premier League clubs and one Bundesliga side have shown an interest in taking Djed Spence on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, according to a report.

Spence only joined Tottenham in the summer, when they signed him from Middlesbrough following a successful loan spell at Nottingham Forest. The right-back had helped Forest to promotion to the Premier League and was one of their key players.

However, his own step up to the top flight has not been so easy. Tottenham already have Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty ahead of him in the pecking order at right-back.

Neither of them have been particularly convincing themselves. That said, Spence remains firmly behind them in the hierarchy.

To illustrate his struggles for gametime, all four of his Premier League appearances so far have come as a substitute. None have lasted longer than two minutes.

Antonio Conte is yet to use Spence in the Champions League. Meanwhile, the only Carabao Cup appearance he has entrusted him with was a 25-minute cameo from the bench when they lost to his former club Forest in the third round back in November.

Due to his lack of action, a feeling has been growing for a while that Spence could leave Tottenham in January. Having signed a contract until 2027 upon his arrival, any exit would only be a loan, but it might be what he needs.

Now, some details are emerging of where he might end up if Tottenham do ship him out for the next six months.

One of five suitors named

According to ESPN, it is “increasingly likely” that Spence will be loaned out in January. Yet he could remain in the Premier League, where “at least” four clubs are keen to take him.

None of them have been identified in the report.

One club who are named as a suitor, though, are Bayer Leverkusen, who could take Spence abroad for the first time in his career. They are currently in the bottom half of the German Bundesliga table, so may be eyeing some reinforcements.

Currently at right-back, they have Jeremie Frimpong and Timothy Fosu-Mensah. The former has been linked with a move to Manchester United, whom the latter used to represent.

Therefore, perhaps Leverkusen are keeping an eye on potential replacements. If Spurs only want to loan Spence out, he could be a short-term solution, but it is the kind of reaction that can sometimes happen in a January transfer window.

Djed Spence could develop in Germany but prove himself more in England

Several English prospects have developed in the Bundesliga in recent years. For example, Jadon Sancho became a much better player at Borussia Dortmund (even if he has generslly struggled since with Man Utd) and Jude Bellingham is also outlining his potential there.

Leverkusen already have another Englishman on loan from a Premier League club. Indeed, Callum Hudson-Odoi is spending the season there after being lent by Chelsea.

It will be interesting to see whether Spence follows suit, or opts to remain in England instead. Proving himself elsewhere in the Premier League might be the best way to remind Tottenham why they invested in him.

But it will depend on what opportunities emerge. Until any of his Premier League suitors are identified, it is hard to judge.

Besides, the report warns that Spurs might keep hold of Spence if either Emerson or Doherty suffer an injury.

ESPN also denies Emerson could leave this month after some rumours regarding his future.

Still, Tottenham are looking at potential upgrades in his territory. They have been linked with the likes of Pedro Porro and Denzel Dumfries, among others.

It is the most obvious position that Tottenham need to fix if they are to keep Conte happy. As for Spence, he can only focus on getting his confidence and form back in the second half of the season.

To do so, he is going to have to find a new club on a temporary basis.
