Cristiano Ronaldo has said “the chapter is closed” after a week which saw him depart Manchester United and score Portugal’s opening goal in Qatar to make World Cup history.
On Tuesday it was announced that Ronaldo had left Manchester United following a controversial interview in which he criticised the Premier League club and said he had “no respect” for manager Erik ten Hag.
Both parties stated that Ronaldo’s exit was “mutually agreed”.
But the 37-year-old free agent put that behind him on Thursday as he helped Portugal to beat Ghana 3-2 in their opening match of the 2022 World Cup.
Ronaldo also made a piece of tournament history as he converted a penalty to become the first player to score goals at five different men’s World Cups.
“The most important step was that we won,” he commented after the match.
“This chapter is closed after this week. Now we start on a good foot. I helped my team and now it is done.”
Ronaldo also spoke of his pride at writing his name into the World Cup record books.
Ronaldo’s goal sees him surpass Pele (Brazil), Uwe Seeler (West Germany) and Miroslav Klose (Germany), who all scored at four.
Only one other footballer has scored at five World Cup finals: the Brazilian striker Marta.
“This was a beautiful moment, (to score) at my fifth World Cup,” he added.
“We started in a good way. It was an important win. The first match was crucial but also, the world record, this is something that makes me proud.
“I am happy with the result after a tough game.”
Victory means Portugal currently sit top of Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.
