Mets' Eduardo Escobar, Jeff McNeil exit suddenly vs. Phillies with injuries - New York Post

The Mets lost two regulars in the span of a half-inning Friday night.

Eduardo Escobar and Jeff McNeil both left the 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Phillies at Citi Field because of injuries. Escobar came out because of left side tightness in the bottom half of the second inning and McNeil was pulled in the top of the third after he lacerated his right thumb. Both may miss some time, according to manager Buck Showalter.

Escobar departed for a pinch-hitter in the second inning. Showalter said Escobar felt discomfort and the Mets quickly took him out. He will undergo an MRI exam on Saturday.

McNeil grounded out in the second, and had a mini-collision with first baseman Rhys Hoskins, in which Hoskins stepped on McNeil’s finger. McNeil received a few stitches.

“Fortunately, we’ve got a night game [Saturday], so we’ll make sure we’re covered one way or the other,” Showalter said. “Got to make a decision about how long and it’s tough right now, this quickly, after the injury to be able to tell how long it might or might not be.”

There was a significant delay before the top of the third, with several Mets players congregating by second base. There had been only one change expected, Luis Guillorme (who had pinch hit) taking over third base for Escobar. But after McNeil failed to come out of the dugout, Tyler Naquin was brought in to play left field, Mark Canha moved from left to third and Guillorme went to second.

Canha had only played three games in his eight-year big league career at third base, and none since 2016. He handled his one chance in the fifth, fielding a one-hopper off the bat of J.T. Realmuto and throwing him out. The large Citi Field crowd gave him an ovation.

“As soon as he caught it, I was like, ‘Oh, thank God,’ because I knew he was going to be able to throw him out,” Max Scherzer joked. “That’s a perfect example [of dealing with adversity], Mark stepping up, never playing third base and he’s got to play third base. He’s going to get action and he came through for us.”

Minor league infielders Gosuke Katoh and Deven Marrero were lifted from Triple-A Syracuse’s game as possible replacements if McNeil or Escobar needs to go on the injured list.

“I know [general manager] Billy [Eppler] and his group are getting some what-ifs in place,” Showalter said.
