James Corden will wrap up his duties as host of The Late Late Show in 2023.

The British host, who took over the role from Craig Ferguson in 2015, has extended his agreement with CBS for one more season, and will then end his stay in the spring of 2023. In his monologue on Thursday night, Corden spoke about the decision, announcing that "this will be my last year hosting this show."

"When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that. It was going to be a journey, an adventure. I never saw it as my final destination, you know? And I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way. I always want to love making it," he says. "And I really think in a year from now that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there. Okay?"

He added that he is "determined to make this the best year we have ever had making this show," promising plenty of carpool and crosswalks. Corden, with a little shakiness in his voice, admitted there "will be tears," and added that this was the "hardest decision I’ve ever had to make."

"Here’s to the next 12 months and it’s going to be a blast, I promise you that," he wrapped up.

Corden is best known for infusing the show with popular musical segments like “Carpool Karaoke” and “Crosswalk the Musical”, which enlisted A-list talent to sing along with the host in the car or on the streets of Los Angeles. Both "Carpool Karaoke" and "Drop the Mic" were spun-off into stand-alone shows for Apple and TBS, respectively.

Corden, who has hosted the Grammy and Tony awards, has also taken on film roles in recent years, including in the ill-fated Cats and The Prom. He's won 10 Emmys, including for his special Carpool Karaoke: When Corden Met McCartney Live From Liverpool.

“Seven years ago, James Corden came to the U.S. and took television by storm, with huge creative and comedic swings that resonated in a big way with viewers on-air and online,” said George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS.  “From ‘Crosswalk the Musical’ to the legendary ‘Carpool Karaoke,’ and every unique comedy segment he introduced, James has truly reimagined many elements of the late night format.”
