RICHMOND, Va. – The defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Drexel women's basketball team has been picked atop the conference in the 2021-22 CAA preseason poll as voted on by the league's coaches and announced by the conference office on Wednesday morning. The Dragons were also represented individually as Hannah Nihill and Keishana Washington were selected preseason First Team All-Conference.

"It's great for our program to receive this recognition in the preseason, but our focus is on earning a shot to repeat," said head coach Amy Mallon. "It also means we're going to get every team's best each night. We're going to continue to compete, work hard, and improve daily so that each player can be prepared, regardless of the situation."

The Dragons tied with Delaware for first in the preseason poll with 77 points and the two teams evenly split the first place votes with five apiece. James Madison was third with 64 points followed by Towson with 58. Hofstra, Elon, and Charleston were fifth through seventh while William & Mary, UNCW, and Northeastern rounded out the poll.

Nihill was the 2020-21 CAA Defensive Player of the Year, a First Team All-Conference honoree, and the Dean Ehlers Award winner. She averaged 16.1 points a game with 3.8 assists and 2.8 steals per contest. She came away with three or more steals in 13 of 23 games a year ago.

Washington was the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player, netting 26.0 points per game in the conference tournament, including back-to-back 30+ point efforts in the semifinals against James Madison (35) and the title tilt versus Delaware (30). Overall for the year, she averaged 14.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.

In addition to Nihill and Washington, the Dragons return graduate student Mariah Leonard and seniors Maura Hendrixson and Kate Connolly, all three of whom started 16 or more games a year ago. Joining the team is grad transfer Tessa Brugler, who earned First Team All-Patriot League and Patriot League Defensive Team accolades last season at Bucknell.

Drexel opens its CAA title defense on November 9 when it hosts Marist at 5:00 p.m.
