OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – Getting to Spring Lake from northbound U.S. 31 is about to get complicated with the closure of the M-104 exit.

The closure of ramps to M-104 and 3rd Street will begin Sunday, Oct. 31, and last until late December, according to a notice from the Michigan Department of Transportation.

In addition, northbound U.S. 31 and M-104 will be reduced to single traffic lanes.

The work is part of a $24 million comprehensive project to improve six bridges at the U.S. 31/M-104 interchange in Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg. That project is expected to continue until June 2023.

Starting Sunday motorists on northbound U.S. 31 who need to get to M-104 and 3rd Street will be detoured north on U.S. 31 to westbound Van Wagoner Street, southbound 174th Avenue/3rd Street and south on Pine Street.

Northbound U.S. 31 access to and from Harbor Island Drive and Adams Street also will be closed.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on northbound U.S. 31 just north of Waverly Avenue. Northbound traffic will continue to be crossed over to the southbound side between Jackson and 3rd streets.

In addition, both directions of M-104 will be reduced to one lane between U.S. 31 and Rex/School Street.

An alternative route suggestion is M-45 (Lake Michigan Drive) to M-231 to M-104/I-96.

The good news is that pathway trails south of the M-104 bridge and on the east side of the northbound U.S. 31 drawbridge bridge are expected to reopen on Wednesday, Nov. 3, according to MDOT. Those trails have been closed since early September.

The MDOT bridge improvement project includes deck and joint replacement, deck patching, beam and steel repairs, painting and substructure repairs. It impacts:

  • The U.S. 31 drawbridge over the Grand River.
  • Northbound and southbound U.S. 31 over the south channel of the Grand River.
  • U.S. 31 over M-104.
  • U.S. 31 over 3rd Street.
  • M-104 over the Spring Lake Channel.

The M-104 exit off of northbound U.S. 31 will close for about two months starting Sunday, Oct. 31.

M-231 and M-45 are suggested alternate routes to Spring Lake while the exit to M-104 from U.S. 31 is closed.
