Spartanburg, S.C. – Returning to the starting lineup, quarterback Rogan Wells threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns and wide receiver Raphael Williams caught a school-record 16 passes for 177 receiving yards and two TDs as Western Carolina won its second-straight Southern Conference road game, defeating Wofford 41-21 at Gibbs Stadium.
Williams' 16 receptions eclipsed the previous school benchmark of 15 accomplished twice by Terryon Robinson in both 2014 and 2016 and Eric Rasheed in 1984. It is also represents the most catches by a player at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level this season. Williams finished with his fourth, 100-yard receiving game this season and his third game with double-digit receptions.
Wells amassed 357 yards of total offense, adding a team-best 48 rushing yards including a game-opening 32-yard touchdown rush on WCU's opening possession. TJ Jones ran for 40 yards, adding 19 on a reception while Kenny Benjamin caught two passes for 28 yards, adding 24 on the ground.
Western Carolina scored on its first four possessions on Saturday with Wells adding a 72-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Jones and Richard McCollum splitting the uprights twice from 37 and 23 yards out to race out to a 20-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Williams capped the half with his two scoring receptions from nine and 27 yards as Catamounts led 34-7 at halftime.
Freshman tight end Brandon Blackmon caught his first collegiate pass on a three-yard scoring strike from Wells to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive and a commanding 41-7 lead in the third quarter. Wofford scored twice in the fourth quarter to provide the final tally, 41-21.
Irvin Mulligan rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown to lead the Terriers offense with David Legette scoring from 19 yards out and Wyatt Bartkowiak catching an 11-yard touchdown inside the final three minutes for the Terriers.
Senior LB Kareem Taylor paced WCU with 10 tackles including eight solo stops and 1.5 tackles for loss, recording double-digit stops for the fifth time this season. Taylor was also credited with a forced fumble to key a strong defensive effort. Jacob Harris and Marlon Alexander were both credited with five tackles with Alexander recording two tackles for loss with one of two sacks for the Catamounts. Rod Gattison came up with his second interception of the season with a second-quarter pick that set-up WCU's final score of the opening half.
Western Carolina returns home for its first of back-to-back home games as the Catamounts host chromatic rival, Furman, at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field on Saturday, Nov. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Heroes' Day as WCU honors all military personnel, civil servants and first responders.
