PATNA: Disgruntled JD(U) leader Upendra Kushwaha is set to formally announce his separation from the party and float a new political outfit on Monday amid signals he could ally with BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the buzz of a possible seat deal.
The new outfit would most probably be named after erstwhile Samata Party founder and former Union minister George Fernandes or socialist leader and former JD(U) president Sharad Yadav, close associates of Kushwaha said on Sunday.
The plans crystallised on the first of a two-day “consultative” meet that Kushwaha held with supporters on Sunday. “Kushwaha has called a press conference on Monday afternoon to announce his future course of action,” senior JD(U) leader and Kushwaha’s close associate Fazal Imam Mallick told TOI.
According to a senior leader of Kushwaha’s erstwhile Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP), the new outfit’s name may be “Janta Dal (George)” or “Janta Dal (Sharad)”. “The name is yet to be finalised. Kushwaha may prefer to suffix the name of George as he was the founder of the erstwhile Samata Party as well as the first president of JD(U),” the senior leader said.
Kushwaha had merged his RLSP with JD(U) in March 2021 when he returned to Bihar’s governing party helmed by CM Nitish Kumar.
Some of Kushwaha’s associates claimed BJP had reportedly assured him that it would spare some of the state’s 40 Lok Sabha seats for his new outfit if they had a truck. As Kushwaha headed to the exit door, JD(U) national president Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh asked him Sunday to disclose whether his recent trips to Delhi — to meet BJP leaders — remained fruitful. Lalan termed Kushwaha’s supporters’ conclave “not an official meet of JD(U)”, saying only the state party chief had the right to call such a huddle.
At the meet, Kushwaha supporters discussed issues related to an alleged “deal” between JD(U) and RJD, the governing ally whom CM Nitish picked last August after dumping BJP. The main banner at the meet had pictures of Nitish, Fernandes and Sharad, but not of Lalan or state JD(U) president Umesh Kushwaha. “A total 54 Kushwaha supporters expressed their views at the meet,” JD(U) state vice-president Jitendra Nath said.
