Jeff Garlin may have parted ways with The Goldbergs in December, but his CGI ghost still lingers around the sitcom’s ninth season. The series star exited the show in the midst of filming last year, following an H.R. investigation and multiple complaints of on-set misconduct. Shortly before his departure, Garlin discussed the allegations in depth with Vanity Fair’s Maureen Ryan, insisting at the time that he had “not been fired from The Goldbergs.

On Tuesday, Garlin’s costar Wendi McLendon-Covey publicly addressed his absence for the first time, responding to criticism of how the show has handled his mid-season disappearing act. “They should either cancel The Goldbergs or kill off Jeff Garlin’s character because the workarounds they’ve been using this season ain’t working,” journalist Noel Murray tweeted on Monday, alongside a clip in which Garlin’s face appears to be superimposed on another body.

“Thanks for the great suggestion Noel!” McLendon-Covey replied on Tuesday. “This season threw us for a loop because a.) it’s hard to incorporate someone who doesn’t want to be there and wants to leave mid-scene, and b.) we werent about to re-write the 2nd half of the season. We’re doing our best.” (Vanity Fair has reached out to ABC for comment.)

In December, Variety reported that Garlin had left the series while shooting the 15th and 16th episodes of the show’s 22-episode ninth season. According to Variety, Garlin’s separation from the series meant that a stand-in was being used, filmed from the back, and the actor’s head had already been superimposed on another man’s body for promotional materials in the past. His character would be incorporated by “using off-camera dialogue pulled from earlier episodes and unused takes, as well as previously shot images of Garlin.” The outlet noted that Garlin would be paid for his continued appearances on The Goldbergs, despite not being present on set.

When Vanity Fair asked about the accusations made against him, which included alleged inappropriate sexual comments and unwanted hugs, Garlin largely dismissed them. “My opinion is, I have my process about how I’m funny, in terms of the scene and what I have to do,” he said. “They feel that it makes for a quote ‘unsafe’ workspace. Now, mind you, my silliness making an unsafe workspace—I don’t understand how that is. And I’m on a comedy show. I am always a kind and thoughtful person. I make mistakes, sure. But my comedy is about easing people’s pain. Why would I ever want to cause pain in anybody for a laugh? That’s bullying. That’s just uncalled for.”

The Goldbergs has yet to be renewed for a 10th season, although Garlin told V.F. last year that he expected season nine would be the show’s last.
