The final leg of state’s effort to renumber highway exits based on mile markers has reached Central Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced on Thursday that it will start renumbering exits along Interstates 290 and 395 between Marlborough and Webster in August.
Work on replacing the exit markings will begin on Sunday, Aug. 8 and likely take two weeks to complete, MassDOT said. Crews will install new signage during overnight hours on the highways between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
As part of this project, MassDOT said, the existing mileposts on I-290 will be replaced with “dual” mile markers showing mileage for both I-395 and I-290. This work will be done following the completion of the exit renumbering conversion.
The process of renumber the exit posts in the state is nearly complete and follows Federal Highway Administration requirements. Previous to this project, interstates and major roadways in Massachusetts have always utilized a sequential exit numbering method.
The Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program will support 90% of the project, and the rest will be covered using state highway funds.
