Red Sox Notebook: Christian Arroyo, Kevin Plawecki exit early with injuries - Boston Herald

Christian Arroyo’s fairy-tale season is in jeopardy after a scary collision with Kiké Hernandez on Sunday afternoon.

Chasing a shallow fly from second base into center field, Arroyo ran full speed into a knee-first slide in which his right knee appeared to crash into Hernandez’s shin.

The ball dropped between them for a double by Hunter Dozier, but Arroyo’s injury looked far more concerning than the extra bases.

“Christian, he is sore,” manager Alex Cora said. “It’s right below the patella, so he’ll be sore for a little bit. Nothing structural, he had X-rays, everything is good. They checked, they moved his knee around. It seems like he’ll be OK, obviously. Let’s see how it goes on the plane and when we get to Tampa.”

The Sox must be relieved that X-rays were negative because Arroyo appeared to be seriously hurt for a few minutes, as he rolled around on the ground in obvious pain. He walked off the field under his own power with a heavy limp while leaning on a Red Sox trainer.

It would be a devastating injury if the Sox had to lose him for an extended period. The 26-year-old is on his fourth big league team and has never before played this well. He was hitting leadoff again on Sunday and was 1-for-3 at the dish, moving his average to .264 with a  .756 OPS and some clutch home runs in the past two weeks.

The Sox could call on Michael Chavis if they need depth from Triple-A Worcester.

Backstop injured

Arroyo wasn’t the only injury the Sox suffered on Sunday.

Kevin Plawecki could miss some time after appearing to injure his hamstring chasing after an errant throw by Hernandez in the third inning. The backup catcher came up limping and stayed in the game to finish the inning, but was removed for Christian Vazquez his next time up at the plate.

“With Kevin, we will wait a little bit (before making a roster move),” Cora said. “He wanted to grind it out; we’ll know more (Monday).”

Vazquez gets most of the work behind the plate, but the Sox have relied heavily on Plawecki, who is hitting .254 with a .668 OPS this year.

Rookie stays hot

It was another big day for Bobby Dalbec.

The rookie first baseman was 2-for-4 to extend his hot streak. He’s now hit safely in eight of his last nine games and has raised his season OPS from .595 to .705.

Still, it wasn’t a perfect day for Dalbec; he made an error at first base and struck out in a key spot in the eighth.

Captain has a plan

Game-planning coordinator Jason Varitek had some interesting pregame comments when asked about MLB’s new crackdown on sticky substances. The new rules go into effect Monday, when umpires will begin checking pitchers throughout the game.

“I think it’s an ongoing process but just to navigate it and see how guys balls are playing and see what to do,” Varitek said. “We have quite a bit of ideas of where things need to roll forward. I hate to always be the ‘I can’t tell you everything’ guy, but sometimes there’s some competitive advantages that you work hard for and look for (and I don’t want to share them publicly).

“We have some ideas (how to deal with it) moving forward.”

Duran does it again

It was another big day for outfield prospect Jarren Duran.

Playing for the Triple-A WooSox, Duran was due up second in a tie game in the tenth inning. With the automatic runner on second, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs decided to walk Franchy Cordero to face Duran, who worked a 3-1 count and then blasted one over the left-field wall for his 12th home run of the season.

It was the first walk-off homer in Polar Park history. Duran was mobbed on the field, where his teammates ripped his jersey off.

The team’s top outfielder prospect is now hitting .286 with a 1.006 OPS in 30 games.
